62 /100 3 THE COURTYARD, BRIDGE GATE
“This micropub bought out and renamed the Calans micropub, changing the interior so the bar is bigger and longer against the back wall, but hasn't really increased capacity on the inside. They have on the outside, building a somewhat gaudy timber and plastic sheet covering for the courtyard it occupies and there's lots of picnic tables now available. The beer selection has changed a little but it's still from very worthwhile microbrewers and a ciders and keg ale has also been added. Two main differences though from Calans is the atmosphere, which has been killed off by some of the changes but notably by the lack of personality behind the bar - mostly using younger staff that are more interested in their phones than you. This impacts who comes in and I see a lot less local here now than in the past. Prices have rocketed too - this is the first place in Hebden that all options on a visit were over £4 a pint. Has a sister pub in Todmorden 4 miles away.“

“Seeing as how so many Hebden Bridge pubs are in plain sights, it's hard to find the Pub as it's slightly tucked away. It is incredibly small with seating for less than a dozen inside although there's more outside seating in warm weather. The beerist is impressive: 6 sessionable casks from smaller breweries such as Bristol Beer Factory and Little Critters, with a worthwhile if small keg selection. No packaged beers but I can live with that, as there's plenty to choose from. They do occasional tap takeovers (recently Fell from Cumbria was featured). If the beer doesn't tempt you they offer about 15 gins. Certainly a worthwhile stop.“

Nightjar (Bar)
THE PICTURE HOUSE, HALIFAX ROAD
“Small dark and atmospheric micropub (although there's some seating outside). They only have a couple of Nightjar beers on cask but if you check the fridge you can sample a good handful of their beers in can. There are also interesting guests on cask and keg (Glen Affric, Nailmaker). Another place that probably has more appeal in quieter times but the beer is good and well-priced and the bar itself is comfortable and friendly.“

“Not sure why there's so little love for this place. I'm a fan of Vocation (although I realise they divide opinion), and its great to find a dedicated pub in their hometown. Its cavernous and morebthan a little crowded but it is nicely laid out so there's more seating than a first glance would suggest. There are about 20 taps, not all will be of interest to the seasoned ticker but there are about 12 Bocation taps (more guests than core range) alongside some guests from the likes of Cloudwater, Verdant and Hudson Valley. Small bottle fridge as well. So while not able to reach the heights if the Ubdergroubd Assembly in Leeds, it is a highlight of the Henden Bridge crawl. Yes it is expensive so be prepared. And the coffee is amazing which is always a plus.“

Old Gate (Bar)
1-5 OLD GATE
“The Old Gate is a decent pub which suffers from two problems: it's got a formal restaurant vibe that puts me off a tiny bit (drinkers are welcome, it's friendly, but I just like things a bit more relaxed), and it's surrounded by insanely good venues. In most towns this size it would be an amazing find but in Hebden Bridge it suffers from comparison to, say, Drink? and the Fox & Goose. Having said this, the beer selection is fine if a trifle safe: Vocation, Marble, Kirkstall and Squawk on cask alongside more Vocation & Kirkstall on keg. Prices are cheap for where you are (£4.30 for a pint of Marble Earl Grey IPA at 6.8%) and it is a comely place which is probably best appreciated on a quiet Tuesday afternoon rather than a vibrant Saturday in May.“

“Craft beer bar and shop in the west of the town. It's small but spacious enough with seating for about 20 plus more upstairs. Modern and pared down with an eclectic piped music selection. They offer a couple of Marble beers on cask (at a very reasonable price) plus about 6 keg, including a 15% Wander Beyond barleywine (was too early in the day for this one). The star of the show here is the collection in the bottle fridges which would rival most selections in the big city. Tends toward UK craft but nothing wrong with that. Part of making this town a surprising beer destination.“

“It's a little bit out of the main part of town, but it's certainly worth the short trek to the Fox and Goose. Its a small, homely pub but very well put together and looked after. The front room has a bar and some seating, with more seats available in room to the right and left. You are greeted with the six handpulls offering beers mostly from Northern breweries such as Redwillow, Wishbone and Chapter, with a couple of proper keg and an enticing bottle fridge. They go from traditional to full-on craft and occasionally have events such as tap takeovers (they did Torrside, including some Monsters in bottles, over the Easter weekend). The prices vary (£3.40 to £5.20 for a pint of cask) but its good value for what you're paying for. A top place.“

“I visited at the end of October 2017. It had far more of a restaurant feel about it. My friend and I appeared to be the only ones here just to drink. I found the beer overpriced considering they didn't have to travel very far. We just had the one beer then went on to the Old Gate where we found Vocation beers at a cheaper price.“

“A modern craft beer bar in a brick building not far from the train station. L-shaped room with outdoor seating along the pavement. 20 taps, including four on cask, and nine Vocation beers on our visit. Among the guest beers we notice a Norwegian one from Amundsen. The draught beers are available in thirds. Polite service. Many thanks to ManVsBeer for taking us around to a few bars and pubs in his hometown. The crawl started at Drink?, then Fox & Goose, Old Gate, Calan's Micropub, further to Nightjar and this one. We were very pleased with the guide tour! Nightjar (Bar)
THE PICTURE HOUSE, HALIFAX ROAD
“A cool, little, modern beer bar located to the right hand side of the Hebden Bridge Picture House. Three draught beers from Nightjar and a few guests from breweries such as Northern Monk and Buxton at our stay. Good range of craft beer cans and bottles in the fridge close to the servery. Small patio in front of the bar, even with chesterfield chairs. Polite service. (Visited with ManVsBeer, Snegurochka and Steinar 04.07.2018).“

“When we visited the place on a sunny day in early July, the first thing we notice was the popular and flower decorated outdoor seating in front of the place. Nice location at the edge of the inner city and just on the other side of Drink? A rather large restaurant in two floors, modern outlook in brick and tiled floor, with a long bar at the ground floor displaying a line-up of 10 cask ales, most of them from Yorkshire and Manchester breweries. The cask menu is supported by craft beers on keg and bottles/cans. It's, of course, quite alright to come here only for drinking. We were in food mood, and I was quite satisfied with my Goat cheese food. Friendly service. (Visited with Snegurochka, Steinar and ManVsBeer 04.07.2018).“

“A lovely, old school, classic pub serving three small rooms, and a cozy beer garden on the top of the pub with stairs leading up from the main bar room. “With ManVsBeer as our local guide we began our pub crawl on a warm summer day in Hebden Bridge at this place. A rather small bottle shop combined with a taproom. The shelves with the bottles can be found in the front room which also have a few chairs and tables. Keg and cask ales in a smaller adjoining room. Toilets and more seating upstairs. Good rotation among the taps, we were informed. Friendly service. At the entrance there is a marked line of the flood reaching its highest level on Boxing Day 2015. Nightjar (Bar)
THE PICTURE HOUSE, HALIFAX ROAD
“In one of the two front facing units either side of the steps leading into the historic cinema on the main road through the town, it’s a very small single room micropub with a tiny service bar in the middle of the back wall that manages to cram in three hand pumps supplemented by keg options from taps on the wall. The fridge at the side also has some worthwhile bottled craft brews. This was a Slightly Foxed brewery venture, now renamed Nightjar, so expect one or two of casks to be from their range, but otherwise it’s an eclectic enough rotating selection and their not afraid to put some very strong stuff through the lines. The room uses the exposed brick of the building to full effect, with seats and tables that look like giant ’Stod Fold’ pump clips, but work very well in here.“

“In the old Moyles building facing the small canal marina on the main road through town, the emphasis on this collaboration bar between Vocation and the owners of the Old Gate pub on the same road is on keg ales, so far from the funkiest of breweries producing these on a regular basis such as those located on the Bermondsey mile in London. There’s 16 of these lines complimenting 4 cask ales, with at least one of the latter being from Vocation, with the former having around 7 brews from Vocation on the taps. It’s also the first place in Hebden Bridge to start selling ’thirds’ of its ales, applying to both cask and keg. The decor although new is very simple, with one Hebden regular jokingly calling it Heart & Soulless when I spoke to him about it, however that won’t keep him out as it’s clearly a bar fully focussed on crafted ales and now has the best tap choices in town in terms of numbers available here. All cans on offer in the fridge are from Vocation or collaborations with the aforementioned.“

“Visited on 28th May 2016. Situated on the main road through town this is a nice looking wine and cheese shop. Once inside could see plenty of wine, cheese and other comestibles but sadly lacking in beer. Eventually found 3 Vocation canned beers hidden away. Think the range has diminshed somewhat. It’s a nice place just not one for beers when we visited.“

“Visited on 28th May 2016. Large pub on a riverside square. Plenty of rooms and seating off bar. Pub had reopened on day we arrived following extensive flood damage and a visit from the One Show. Beer range was solid local beers that did not set the world alight but were well kept and well priced. Really good decor and extra points for having Tom Hingley play at the opening. A decent pub but not one to dash to as a rater“

“The White Swan appears quite basic at first but it’s comfortable, clean and friendly. There are two rooms - the public bar with its water jugs on the ceiling and the lounge bar, which has a nice fireplace and various other things on the ceiling such as Davy lamps, copper kettles, buckets and warming pans. There are five cask beers and they also serve food - the teatime special of three courses for £5 is hard to beat. It wasn’t gourmet food but it was very tasty and attractively served. Albert (Bar)
ALBERT STREET
“Once a traditional Victorian styled pub, it was completely remodelled after the 2015 Boxing Day floods which closed it for nearly seven months. The owners have put a lot of time and effort changing things into a very plush, welcoming, and convivial place to drink whilst retaining some of its old charm. Small plate food is now served, and the six ale pumps have been retained, albeit on the relocated bar area which is now central in the pub, but as yet the selection is not as eclectic as other places in the town. All the seating faces out of its three front windows.“

“Opened its doors on 30th October 2014 and operated by Bridestones Brewery above the town. It’s a regular sized shop unit for the town and stocks a considerable range of ales, many from the funkier Yorkshire breweries, but plenty from beyond the county too, all of which come from microbreweries or craft brewers. They also serve ales here from a bar in the back room, which has been extended since it was forced into a full refurbishment after the Boxing Day floods of 2015 - reopened the following Easter and is now independently run, with a second change of ownership in November 2019.“

“A victim of the 2012 floods in Hebden Bridge, and again on Boxing Day 2015, when its beautiful traditional design and atmosphere was ruined. It’s open again but this has now gone, with a bright new design with exposed stone brick work throughout. It has recently tried to expand its cask ale options and I have found up to 4 guest on here on a visit, but the beer is the worst kept in the town, so often a disappointment. It is not a free house so this may change if the landlord also changes. At the moment it is vibrant with a very non-ratebeer type crowd.“

“A renowned first floor music venue in the Calder Valley that consistently attracts well known acts from an eclectic mix of genres for intimate gigs and performances. There is however a public bar here too which is not that well advertised so it’s very easy to spend time in the town and miss out on the constantly rotating selection here. Stod Fold Gold is the permanent fixture here now, but the other three pumps all rotate and there’s a large pool of craft breweries that supply the ale exemplified by a wall full of the used beer clips here. There’s also a keg ale option here too. The bar furniture is very simple stuff as there’s a no nonsense vibe about the place, however there’s a pool table here if you don’t fancy a seat. They also serve Himalayan and Indian cuisine here cooked by a Tibetan chef. The bar has two sides so whether you are here for a gig, or just to sup the current selection then you’re not going to be disappointed where craft ale is concerned. Members get 40p off a pint.“

“On the main commercial street in the town. It used to have a better selection than it does now, but with the opening of Drink? as a bottle shop in the town it has now reduced its selection and mainly mainly sells just wine and cheese as you might expect. You may find some Vocation canned ales here including their seasonal efforts, and a couple of ciders in bottles but they also sell mead here, which is probably its main draw and the only place in Hebden you will find it. Closed during the 2020 pandemic.“

“The entrance to this underground bar is almost opposite the main square on the same side of the road as the NIssa grocery store that seems to have a similar bottled beer supplier. There’s no taps here but beer and ale drinkers can find a good selection of local bottled ales and foreign beers with a bias from the Low Countries and some of these are seldom seen on these shores (even the Guinness bottle was the very strong export version that is sold in Belgium). The decor is nothing to shout about, the walls could be from a living room and the tables from a dining room, both with a feel of late 20th century blandness. Given that the valley has been prone to flooding and this place suffered being below ground level it is understandable. At the weekend they have no problem packing this place out and there’s certainly not enough tables and chairs to cope, although the disco with its eclectic indie-party mix means plenty want to dance rather than sit. Food is served early evening. Currently closed due to flood damage in 2015 - as this is a basement bar it is expected to be closed for a while given it was completely immersed in water.“

“A plush pub with an emphasis on dining (they’ll pretty much ask you if you are eating if you enter), and also a hotel. The building in keeping with the rest of the town in its yellow-beige large stone brick style is an attractive construction just across the road from the tiny main square. Inside the decor is a mix of wood floors, panels and furniture with more comfortable lounge type chairs and wallpapers on walls above fireplaces - it makes for a superb and classy look, however this look does not come cheap as it is the most expensive pub in town. It has a range of cask ales but they rarely change, however this includes the resident Slightly Foxed ale which, other than it is a beautiful pub, is the reason to come here as it is a special brew made for this place. There’s a car park at the pubs rear expressly for customers only given its prominence in the town centre, and here starts the extensive rear garden area that is sandwiched between the river and road, the latter of which is rising up the hill and unnoticeable from the picnic tables that extend way back from the pub in its own grounds. Also here are several annexe rooms built into the wall under the road but again unaffected by the traffic given it is high above the building.“

“A centrally located pub with a prime location on the small main square. It was taken over by the same people that used to run the ’Crown’ pub in the town shortly before the Boxing Day floods of 2015 closed it for five months. The refit has produced a better, plusher interior than it used to have, and it’s an inviting traditional pub. There’s four ale pumps and all the beers rotate, although it’s often the same regular beers from about 10 local and regional microbreweries that occupy the pumps, which is fine for visitors in this tourist heavy pub who may not see these ales too often.“

“A very central pub in the small town of Hebden Bridge, looking out onto the stone bridge that crosses the shallow duck-filled river. It’s a relatively small pub with the bar that greets you as soon as you enter and a cosy enough sitting area in front and to its side. The right hand side of the pub is also convivial but includes tables more suited to dining. It’s traditional in style and as the town centre attracts a number of tourists each day it is perfectly positioned for ad-hoc trade. The ceiling is worth a view as it includes many ceramic beer jugs hanging full of various advertisements for the brewer and other vice related products. There’s a few ales to choose from as well as ordinary lagers, and Black Sheep have recently supplied a pump clip for an ale that celebrates 30 years of the same landlady here, although it’s essentially Black Sheep Bitter which is always served here. It was closed for 10 months following the 2015 Boxing Day floods.“

“Located just a pleasant few minutes walk heading west along the towpath from the centre of Hebden Bridge. This pub is smaller than the stand alone building would suggest, although its function room upstairs gives it a much greater capacity if needed. The main ground floor proves very popular for food at lunchtime and in the evenings so tables may be at a premium if you arrive too late. There is a good range of ales to keep those just seeking a drink occupied and plenty of canalside tables if the weather allows for outdoor drinking - a perfect place to watch barges go by in the summer months. The decor is traditional, well kept with a wood bias and lots of hops hanging down from the beams on the roof. Has a large car park too and it’s very hard to miss from the main road despite being set back from it on the other side of the river. Currently closed due to flood damage in 2015 - It may not reopen until 2017.“

“On the main road through Hebden Bridge this is a modern take on the traditional small town pub. The decor is modern but comfortable throughout in a building utilising its stone floor and walls with great effect. It’s a popular haunt, especially when the tourists come to town and there’s no shortage of beers to choose from, lager and ales, with a more than ample selection of the latter and foreign bottles too. The ales rotate all the time and about three dozen different brewery’s seem to have a presence here. There’s usually two rotating keg options as well and they’re not afraid to put on ales with high alcohol content. Food is very much on the menu here too and the upstairs area becomes restaurant only at busy periods, with a comedy night taking this space over on a Sunday. Every few months they will have a mini beer fest with an extra bar area. On the expensive side. Dogs allowed. “

“One of the quieter daytime pubs in Hebden Bridge as the tourists generally opt for the more obvious and prominent pubs around the small central square, however this is also a hotel so it does get regular visitors to it from out of town. It’s very well kept with a modern comfortable design that has clearly had some money pumped into it. The bar along the back wall of the pub is well stocked with several hand pumps with rotating ales. A friendly and cosy local in a nice location between the canal and the river just outside Hebden Bridge. The Stubbing Wharf is a double fronted stone building accessed over a little bridge from the main road.
