“In a refurbished classical building in downtown Marshall. First-time visit. Service slow, but they were busy for their Sunday brunch crowd. Nice selection for brunch and the regular menu. Decent beers. Will be back!“

“Must-visit place when in Southern Michigan and travelling between Ann Arbor and Bell’s, as has been spelled out in previous reviews. Unusual place, with a separate general store where you can get their own coffee. In to mate taproom, with ceramic mugs lining the ceiling and walls, and more seating than it might seem initially. Order at the bar or wait for table service. A dozen or so beers, with flights of 5 for $17.50 (incl. tax); that might seem expensive, but when you consider that they have many barrel aged beers on tap, it’s quite a good deal if you include those on the flight. Friendly, attentive, non-nonsense service. Beer quality does not disappoint. Great place.“

“Dark Horse is a must stop when traveling between Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo...very easy find not far from the interstate in a nice looking old town called Marshall. The first thing you notice is that this is no ordinary taproom or bar or restaurant or even beer garden...it’s all of those and more. This place was built by a local family over time and includes a separate store and motorcycle shop a couple of other venues with more supposedly coming (candy store, bakery, and distillery). The best part is the outdoor gardens and decks as well as a large area for groups and events that includes a stage and a sizable open barn. There are cool garden decorations...fountains...and numerous different types of seating areas. The beers were pretty good to very good...the Crooked Tree IPA was my favorite. I understand their pizzas are very good...as we were headed to Bells next for beer and dinner we didn’t eat...but the wood fired pizza smell was great. Come here during nice weather if you can to enjoy the outdoor beer garden...also the indoor restaurant/bar is not very large.“

“Fairly spartan, definitely not upscale appearance. The service was good. The lunch menu was fairly large. The food was good, though relatively standard pub fare and nothing inspired. The mug club collection is huge for the size of the place!“

“Can’t believe I haven’t rated this place yet? Semi hipster bar-dive type atmosphere. Friendly staff. Good food. Beer list is usually pretty small & typically has things that they bottle. It’s not often that they have pub exclusives on tap. Sometimes, but not often. Where Dark Horse really shines is their yearly 4-Elf part. HUGE tap lists, all sorts of beers you’d never see otherwise. Crazy amounts of weird food (bison pizza, rocky mountain oysters, alligator, etc.) & tons of people make for a good-ass time. Plus BB Plead the 5th is the best beer ever & it flows like a waterfall at 4-Elf.“

“Tiny taproom. Good beer selection. Did not eat so can’t speak to that. Quick and fun tour with nice little VIP tasting at the end. Outdoor area looks awesome. We were there in winter so didn’t get to experience that. Cool gift shop with great swag and homebrew supplies.“

“Man what a cool little place! Dark and rustic with what had to be 3000 mug club mugs hanging from the walls and ceiling. Reasonable beer and food prices plus the food was awesome. A bit out of the way, but worth the stop.“

“I went to Dark Horse for the 4Elf party. A rugged hole in the wall type vibe. My review is surely skewed as I did not see the normal pub experience. The absolutely freezing cold bottle share in the back while waiting in line all night was a fun time. Their organization for these types of events is basically non existent. Very scattered and random. Yet it all worked out as I got my BB Plead. The actually pub was cool yet very full and busy. Didn’t stay in there too long as the main party was in the brewery with a ton of taps. Great beer comes out of this place. Will definitely be going back to get more BB Plead but hopefully they can pull together a better event act. I actually didn’t get food really so I don’t want to give it a rating. All in all a cool place and wouldn’t mind going on a normal day to see what it’s like.“

“Real funky ’homegrown’ pub that is a cross between a frat house/art gallery/hippie pad. Had plenty of time to look around because service was almost non-existent. Place was busy, but far from having every table full. Lousy service doesn’t work for me - DH if you want to be a great beer joint then get your shit together before you open the doors!“

“This place is a diamond in the rough and I do mean ROUGH. If you were to drive by this place you would think you were passing a lumber yard or something. They have a bar, carryout and homebrew store in separate buildings using one parking lot. The photo at the top is pretty representative of the complex. I didn’t see the brewery. The atmosphere inside the bar is good, consisting of some pretty funky tables and a good sized bar. There is a deck out back. The defining feature of this place has to be the 2000+ tan ceramic mugs hanging from virtually everywhere. They are owned by the "mug club" patrons who walk in and grab their mug off the ceiling or wall and get a fresh filled up. The taps are right up front and if you sit near them at the bar you can smell the hops and malt as it is poured into the glasses. The beer ranged from good to very good and the selection was fair. They had 8 or 9 of their beers on tap. I tried them all since their samplers are quite reasonable. The Double Crooked Tree IPA and Reserve Black Bier Ale were both notable as was their Rye. Beer prices seemed pretty reasonable considering the quality of the product. They had a good selection of pizza and sandwiches. The ones I tried were very good. Sandwiches are served on fresh French bread. The service is good to very good depending on the crowd. Both days I visited, it was crowded and it was understaffed but the waitress and cook did a good job keeping up. My glass was never empty! I will go back again particularly considering they are only 5 minutes off Route 94. Beers sampled: Sampled Amber Ale, Rye, Raspberry Ale, Tres Blueberry Stout, IPA, Rye, Fore Smoked Stout, Porter, pint of Reserve Black Bier, snifter of Double Crooked Tree IPA “

“Went on last Saturday night. It was packed. Not a big place. Everyone seemed friendly. Waited a little while then got a spot at the bar. They have a limited menu on the weekends. Pizza and apps. We had the Margahrita Piazza. It was really good. Drank a couple brews, left and went to another place closer to home. Took a growler of Plead the 5th home. They have a huge patio but it was to chilly to sit out there. Besides there was no one else sitting out there. I’ll go back.“

“Drinking fresh beer at the Dark Horse brewpub was an amazing experience. The staff was fast and friendly, the food was delicious and inexpensive, and the atmosphere was truly unique. It’s not every day that you can drink world-class ales in a pub that has hundreds of ornate mugs decorating the walls and ceiling. If given the chance, I would certainly go back.“

“Happened to pop in on 4-Elf party day, so my experience may have been atypical. The first thing anyone notices is all the mugs hanging on the walls and ceiling - very cool. Selection was low for a brewpub (although I think the selection was insane in the 4-Elf party area). Tons of staff, but the food service was still ridiculously slow, and most were not very friendly or helpful. There may have been a bias towards "regulars". Value acceptable. Pizza was decent. The general store had a good selection of Dark Horse brews, at acceptable prices. I hope to stop by here again on a more normal day and see if I can have a better experience. The quality of the beer is worth it.“

“Dark Horse is a great place to visit. The place is a little on the tiny side, but the atmosphere is good. The food and beer is even better though. Since they frequently do interesting brews that are out of the ordinary I would recommend checking the place out. The staff is friendly although I have been there when they were understaffed and it was difficult to get food, but overall this is a pretty sweet place.“

“Visited 06/21/2013. Beer Trip 2013 stop #3. The place is cool, the mugs are a nice touch. We Find plenty of great beers on the menu. The beer garden looks tight and the waitstaff is attentive. All around the best atmosphere and beer combo we have found yet. The store is sweet too. Will definitely be back. Dark Horse Please Expand your distribution into Iowa .... Please. “Let me preface my ranking here. I LOVE DH beers. I know two of the brewers. However, I have to be honest about my experiences here. Service is piss-poor. The staff come across like you are an inconvenience to their lives if you ask to be served. Beer tap selection is average for what they actually brew. I’ve found their general store to be more gratifying in landing their beers than my experiences in the bar. Overall, it’s a brewery that I regularly visit, but you have to know what you’re getting so you don’t walk out wanting to punch someone in the head.“

“Ambiance is awesome. Basically in a little barn with a small wooden bar, everything is wood and cajun looking, including the widdled mugs hanging from the ceiling. Service was excellent. I forgot my id at Bells, went back to Bells to get it, by the time we made it back, Dark Horse was closed, however the bartender kept it open just so we could have some beer and even hooked me up with a growler after the register had been cleared. Selection was good, with some one off, but I had hoped for a little more. Beers were very cheap for the quality. Overall a must stop in Michigan.“

“The feel of DH is unique with a bar, beer garden, skate park, store and skate shop all on the same property. Awesome vibe and sense of humor around the bar, (Tap Rumors board in the rest room was cool and try playing AC/DC on the juke box!). Plus the entire ceiling being mug club mugs was a cool sight to see. Service was good with a few staff answering my questions even while in passing. Great selection of brew in the store and decent selection on tap, (although I would have hoped for a couple more one offs available). Food looked outstanding though I didn't sample anything.“

“The mugs on the ceiling dominate the place, and probably make it seem much smaller than it really is. Lucky to get a table on a busy Friday night. Service was decent, but our server didn’t really seem to know much about beer, which is disappointing. There was an event going on outside, but we were finally able to go out back. Huge beer garden--probably a big hit all summer. Beer selection was just ok, as I was hoping for more than two(?) off-beers. Great place to people watch, and everybody was very friendly. Age range of patrons was probably 1-88! Good to see that“

“Ambiance: Always crowded and often hot. Could use updating (bathrooms, strange hodge-podge floorplan). Still has a hometown dove bar charm though. Service: spotty at best. Everyone I’ve had serve me is certainly honest and that’s appreciated. But, sometimes I’ve had to wait 15 minutes for water, with the waitress passing me by several times. The merchandise store is lacking in customer support and friendliness as well. Selection: beer selection is good. 75% of stuff available in bottles/on tap elsewhere with the rest being specialties and one-off experomentals. Food: whoa what a delight. Stopping here over the past 5 years or so I’ve watched the kitchen go from good to great. Menu consists of pizzas and sandwiches mostly but the ingenuity as well as quality that go into each selection is amazing and the results are awesome. Value: nothing to complain about here, everythig seems reasonably priced in my eyes. Overall: one of my favorite places to stop in southern mid-Michigan. Recommended for the food first (only slightly) and then the great beer. “

“(Visited 02/2012): Dark Horse is located on the south side of Marshall a few miles from I-69. They have a decent-sized private lot shared between the brewpub and store. The inside features a bar right by the entrance and table seating past that, all the way to an enclosed patio. The most immediately striking feature is the collection of mugs hanging overhead throughout the entire space, all of them uniquely identified. Dark Horse has around 8 of their beers available on draught and offers samples (in a plastic cup). On my visit they had several of the more common beers on tap plus a couple I don’t see as often, like Double Crooked Tree and What’s Up With The Monkey Blueberry Ale. All of the beers are solid. Service was decent on a slow weekday afternoon. The bartender was our server and was friendly enough. Food at Dark Horse consists mainly of pub grub. My colleague and I got sandwiches and they were decent. Overall this is a worthwhile stop to try some Dark Horse beers.“

“I wish i could give this place a higher rating, met up with some friends from out of town on our way back to Lansing and our waitress was completely rude, she actually told me NO when i asked for another beer, not because I was drunk, but because she was too busy to do it, she ended up passing us off to another waitress so that saved the night a little bit, but there weren’t THAT many people there that she would be SOO busy that she had to REFUSE me from getting another drink.......but I will be back to try again, how else am I going to drink out of my mug huh?“

“This had pretty good atmosphere and good selection. My big issue was that they didn’t have a sampler, so that you could try everything they had. Instead, you had to buy pints or 1/2 pints. Other than that though, the service was awesome. This was our first stop on a Michigan beer tour, and the bartender was very helpful in giving recommendations about places to go.“

“decided to get away from Indiana for a day and trip up especially for visiting dark horse. looks a bit sketch as you pull up and my wife commented that it looked like a dive. laid back, nice ambiance inside, and as many others have mentioned, they have quite the number of mugs from the rafters, each a bit different than the next, which was pretty cool. took the tour, which wasn’t particularly in depth, but for seven bucks got you a pint glass and six tasters up in the loft/VIP area...five of which werent on tap downstairs, making it well worthwhile. food was above average (hot Hawaiian pizza was seriously spicy) and the menu extensive. got lucky with beer selection...bb plead the fifth had come up along with some specialty with seven citrusy hop varieties that was quite tasty. double crooked tree, sarsaparilla 666, and other fun items available up in the loft...well worth the visit, especially with my fortuitous timing with the tap selection“

“Walking in for my first time...I was instantly in love! It has to be my favorite brewery in Michigan, based on atmosphere. The staff is extremely friendly, and even the locals are great to talk to. I love the mug club mugs hanging everywhere, the beer is great, and the pizza was delicious. I hope to visit many more times in the future. Make sure you bring in your old 6/4 packs for a 25 cent pint!“

“Now this is what I was expect when I think of a brewery! Great atmosphere, kinda looked like it was a front for junk yard. Cool digs. Had a decent selection of regular brews with 4 "specials". Our waitress was very nice. The food was excellent and they had a larger menu than I expected. I know brewery snobs usually go the other way, but one more tv would have been nice. Do wish they had a sampler.“

“The big let down here was that they didn’t have sampler trays and we were discouraged from buying half pints ("it’s only $.50 more to get a pint") I really wanted to try the whole lineup, so it was a letdown that we had to choose. I did love the rural feel to the bar and the mugs overhead but fuck man, get some taster trays!“

“Man I loved my trip to this brewery. When you walk in the first thing that catches your eye is all the mugs on the ceiling. Patrons walk in grab their personal mug of the ceiling (they are identified by number) and begin drinking. The wait staff are really friendly and very talkative. The food has a personal twist to it oh and by the way the beer is delicious. Double Crooked Tree IPA YUMMY. All the beers went with the food and matched the love the put into their building. Great place and I will be back.“

“Out in the middle of no-where Michigan its a quit hop off 94 traveling to our from Detroit. A total small town locale, the pub itself has that small town feel too. The customers seem to be all regulars that know each other and the walls are decorated with what appears to be memorabilia that the customers put up themselves. The best part is the mugs that hand all over the wall and ceiling. Each is different and numbered for all the people that one. The Mug Club seems worthwhile...The beer list is displayed on each table with a plastic menu, each beer that is available has an X next to it. I was supremely disappointed in the beers available as all they had were regulars that I can get at any half decent store in Chicago...The service was good, they were nice and rushed us through our meal as we told them we were in a hurry. The food was pretty decent. Lots of people raved about the pizza but they were average at best. With the limited tap list, despite the easy free-way access, this is not a place I would venture again.“

“Another stop at RBSG 2010. The ambiance is incredible, with all of the ’Mug Club’ mugs hanging from the ceiling, tres cool. They had about 10 of their beers on tap, all served in appropriate glassware. I didn’t eat, but the food looked, and smelled, delicious, and I regretted my decision to wait, and eat at Bells. the little shop next door sells a variety of their beers to-go as well. Cool tour, neat place, you should definitely check this place out.“
