“Parking on the street and small lot. No service to speak of, but was asked at checking out if I found everything I was looking for. Pretty good pricing. A little out of the way for most of Detroit, but not as picked over as some places. I found a couple bottles here.“

“Decent selection, usually a go to if my regular spot doesn't have it. Not a great singles selection or international selection, but they typically have what other places don't. A good spot to stop in if you're in the area.“

“A local bar ambiance, I want to say the feel is upscale divey. Don’t ask me what makes that different from a dive, maybe it’s just a little cleaner. But I like it. A good selection of craft taps, which included 2013, ’14, and ’15 La Folie on tap a couple days ago. So you can expect to see some oddities here from the distributor. Very good service and very reasonable prices for what they were serving. Each tap available in multiple glass sizes as well, which is great. Didn’t check the bottle list, and didn’t try the food. Do note: cash only.“

“Kind of like the Champagne’s of Downriver. Not *quite* as cheap in many cases, but close. This is the cheapest beer store Downriver, no doubt. Not only that, they have a great selection, too. Pat & Dave are good guys who will go out of their way to hook-up the locals. I have recently stopped going there as often, only because I’ve moved somewhat out of the area :( but whenever I’m back Downriver, I stop in. They always get in new stuff, too. This is pretty much THE Downriver beer store.“

“A great place to have close by. Put in the category of a craft beer sports bar probably. A really great selection of taps and also bottles to go. Typical bar food menu that will probably exceed your expectations. A fantastic bacon cheeseburger that’s a must have. Service can get backed up. But it usually is pretty busy at prime times. Overall a great place downriver.“

“Ambiance is dim & kind of dive bar-like. Fitting, with camaraderie and sporting events always on TV. Service is fine, selection is very nice - constantly rotating between all kinds of craft brews & often holding special tasting events and tap takeovers. Best tap selection Downriver. Greasy & delicious bar food. It ain’t healthy but it tastes great. Beers are moderately priced. Not great but far from the worst, too. Overall, one of my favorite places to get together with friends and drink. Seems like they’re always carrying something I haven’t had.“

“This is a 50’s style sports bar. Lots of locals in here for dinner and a beer. A ton of sandwiches that come with very good home made chips. The beer taps are theirs and the ones I had were solid examples. They had many styles represented. A neat place of you are in the area.“

“I liked this place. The staff were helpful and the bar was ambiance for me. The food was OK. I was surprised to learn it was cah only! Luckily had enough. Also did not like happy hour featuring only mass produced beers“

“I have not found a place that sells their beer for cheaper than this place. Great selection and great value. My one knock is that for most domestic beers are only sold in 6 or 4-packs. I prefer to buy individual bottles for beers that I have not tried before. They started a make your own 6-pack on Sunday with very limited options. But this is the place to go for great prices on cases, 6-packs, or kegs.“

“Small neighborhood bar feel, nice tap list, a few I haven’t had before. Some big screen TVs (go tigers!), staff were nice, prices were decent Oud Bruin was pricey and they warned you up front. Nice place if I lived in the area I’d be in a lot. Usual bar food. Don’t take credit cards.“

“Best beer store south of Detroit. Hands down, no questions asked. Huge staff, great selection of snacks and huge selection of beer, and if it can be had, they will get it. They also have great deals on over stocked beers, and have bottle return machines that take all their diverse brands for your convenience.“

“A bit overpriced it is one of the best selections Downriver. I usually like to kick it with the main bartender and owner. He makes it great. Most of the bartenders there are pretty accommodating, but they could use some more people on staff. And I am not sure what the training is like...but even though I know most of the beers I like someone to know at least if I am looking for a craft light beer where to point me. I still and will always love and support the Oak. A downriver staple.“

“Favorite place to go downriver. Selection is fantastic all year. I’ve never had a problem with being taken care of even on extremely busy nights. Sometimes it reminds me a little too much of a sports bar with the atmosphere and food selection, but may be what they’re going for. I’ve seen families with young children there many times. Amazing place.“

“The Oak is one our favorite stops when visiting family while in town. Its a old school corner bar with a amazing beer selection. I think they have 40 taps which varies from a few macros to keep the locals happy a few mild imports like Stella and Bass and the rest is some craft goodies. The last few times we were there they had on Founders Blushing Monk, Dark Horse Double Crooked Tree and Bells Hop Slam. Some of our favorites. Food is good its a bar food menu thats done right. Dont go there and expect Surf and Turf. Service has always been good some of the staff is very knowledgable about beers. A few times we went there it can get pretty busy even during the day time. Also their bottle menu is pretty good too. A few standard crafts as well as a few seaonal rarities.“

“When we travel through town we were pointed to Sports 50’s for a place to get a bite to eat and abrew. Decor is a 50’s dner type theme which worked well for them years ago. Food and the patio are worth checking this place out. As far as beer the few times we had stopped by selections was thin nothing too unique. A few times we got some funky beers. And a few times we got some good ones too. As for a sample before you commit. Service is usually decent..“

“One of Michigan stops . Discount is like a warehouse style store big stacks of macros and pop. Their craft beer selection has grown substantialy in the last few years. Sometimes you will get lucky and score a hard to find brew. Prices are decent service is hit or miss. But if you know what your looking for I doesent matter. Wyandotte is a good trip for us we always hit Discount and The Oak Cafe while in town.“

“I walked in and I hate to sound like I am complaining but the place was dirty. Any bottle you touched was covered in dust. The store was slow when I was there and it still took someone 15 minutes before they asked if they could help me in any way. When I asked about specific beers the staff was not very knowledgeable except to tell me if they had them and where they were at. As far as value they have a few things that are priced really well but most things in the store I can find cheaper elsewhere.“

“My favorite bar. This place is exactly what I look for in a bar. Top notch beer selection that rotates constantly, quick service, greasy food, and an environment that allows for conversation. They also hosting a tasting a month ago that included beers like Founders KBS and Nemisis, Goose Island Dominique, Kuhnhenn Barrel aged Fourth Dementia Olde Ale, Dark Horse Barrel Aged Plead the 5th, and many others. Great time.“

“The Oak, as any regular will tell you, was among the first to really champion Michigan/quality beers. They have a wonderful selection of microbrewed beers from Michigan and around the USa, not to mention a vast assortment of international specialty beers. They always seem to have something very interesting on tap such as: Founder’s B’fast Stout, Bell’s Hopslam, etc. The food at The Oak is second to none when it comes to bar food. If you like food, beer and a casual, neighbourhood atmosphere (especially good since the smoking ban!) you nee dgo no further than The Oak!!“

“An excellent store. Sure, it doesn’t have all the fancy trappings of some stores, but it’s easy to see that the saving are passed on to the customers in the form of great prices. They have a great selection of Michigan beers and an excellent selection of quality imported beers as well. they are also known for looking after loyal customers when it comes to allocations of limited availability brews. The staff and managment are knowlegeable and very friendly. They also have a reasonably good wine selection (even if it is heaviliy California-biased). Most of the staff are just as keen to help with wine choices as they are with beer. Again, the pricing here is second to none. They won’t necessarily have every wine you’re looking for, but if they DO have it, chances are it will be cheaper than anywhere else.“

“Every fledgling beer afficianado from the Ohio Border to River Rouge knows about the Oak Cafe. Huge selection of bottles (150+ varieties from what I’m told) as well as a vast (and constantly changing) draft selection. I was there most recently for "Stoutfest" in March 2010. Atmosphere is neighborhood sports pub. Staff is helpful and knowledgeable, polite. "Real Beer" lovers go to The Oak, and the staff seem to share their enthusiasm.“

“Great selection of all beverages, including soda. Beer selection is impressive, especially the "singles" section which is so often lacking in other stores. Prices are fair and staff are friendly and knowledgeable about beer. Ambience is that of a small warehouse, but who cares?“

“Pretty good sized liquor store. Lots of wine and liquor and pretty good craft beer selection. Especially for the area which is mostly blue collar. Mostly six packs and bombers. Picked up a Avery Brabrant. Prices were pretty good from what I seen for the area. They had The Oracle from Bells which was a whole dollar cheaper than what Holiday Market. Good place to stop if in the area.“

“Quality: The second best beer store in the area besides Merchants. Good selection of beers from around the World/US/MI. Service: This is one of the weeknesses of DD. If you ask someone about a specific beer, I’m not sure you would get a real good answer. They also have not taken back bottles I have bought there (not sure why not). I’m sure if you asked for a certain product, they would likely get it for you. Selection: They have one of the best selections of local, domestic, and imported craft beers in the area. Like most stores, I wish they had a better selection of domestic singles. Value: Some stuff is cheaper than other stores in the area and some is more. I’d say they are pretty competitively priced for what they have. The best part about it is the fact that the Oak Cafe is about a half mile down the road. “

“I recently moved to the area and found this bar a few blocks away. What luck! The draft selection (~35 taps) is always changing and never bad. They also have a huge selection in bottles on the rare occasion I can’t find a draft beer to get. The depth of their beer selection is highlighted by the decor, which features tap handles, posters, etc. from various breweries around the world. The servers generally have good knowledge about the beers and are very good at keeping the glasses full. The food works for this type of place. It has a decent selection for it’s limited cooking area and the prices are very reasonable. The Oak Cafe is a comfortably small and inviting establishment that makes you wish every corner bar were like this one.“

“This was my first stop on a recent Michigan trip. Met Styles here for lunch and some beer.BR Very cozy neighborhood, corner bar. Good atmosphere, a place that I felt very relaxed and comfortable at. Just added some new towers, so I don’t know the total number of taps, but I’m guessing 30+. Bonus, there was a Bells tasting there prior to my visit so there was still BA Third Coast and BA Java on tap. Fast, friendly service and good food. Will definitely return for another visit.“

“I’ve been to the Oak quite a few times and it seems to be getting better and better recently. With the newly added taps, they have about 40 total. About 5 are for the BMC crowd, 15 to 20 are for those that enjoy different beers and the last 5 to 10 are for the serious beer geeks. I was there recently for their Bell’s Tasting. On tap, they had Bells bourbon expedition/double cream blend, bourbon third coast, bourbon java, batch 8000, hopslam, cherry stout.....and that was just for the tasting. Other highlights on tap that night were Abt 12, Trois Pistoles, Michigan Brewing Imperial Stout and Celebrator. Within the last few months, they’ve had Founders Breakfast Stout and a bunch of other rare beers. They also have a very reasonable bottle list too (about 200 different beers from MI, the US, and around the world). There food is quite good too. Just your normal bar food (burgers, sandwiches, buffalo wings), but it is all fresh and good. The service has been getting better too. It has been shaky at times in the past, but it’s been quite good my past 5 or so visits. Get to know and talk with the owner (MikeMac). He definitely knows his shit. Definitely worth checking out if in the area and I’d even go out of my way to stop here. Plus Discount Drinks (a nice beer/liquor/wine) store is less than a mile down the road.“

“Met Styles, Pailhead, Artusory, lunaticharness, and the owner Mike (MikeMac) here for a tasting. The inside is pretty much that of your average corner sports pub but the tap and bottle list is top notch. The owner, Mike, was very friendly and accommodating for our tasting. The food is standard bar food but good quality.“

“Stopped in on 12/12/06. Nice place, the owner Mike is a great guy, met up with him and Pailhead there, and the beer was flowing. Solid tap list, and the bottle selection was great. “first time visitor and the small dark corner bar was very well stocked with 20 drafts and numerous bottled beers from around the state and the world. i had a hard time choosing was to drink. loved the fact that alot of the local breweries were well represented. arcadia, michigan brewery, bells, founders, drangonmead, jolly pumpkin and i am sure there were others. our bartenders melissa and heather were golden they knew alot about what they have and heather makes one of the meanest blt’s i have ever had ($2.75) what a deal. met the owner later on and we explained how we found this place. this deserves a 2nd go around next time i am up there. they rotate the draft selections. hats off gang thanks for the day and night.“

“I went here after a concert last weekend after MikeMac, Syles, and pailhead all recommended it. I walked in and thought i was going to the local hangout for middleaged people, boy was I wrong. After a minute i realized the crowd seemed to be at least half people 21-35 which was good. After ordering my first beer I asked one of the waitresses to point out the owner. He ended up being right next to me and we ended up talking for a few hours and enjoying a few great beers. I had a chance to have JP Oro de Calabaza, JP Luciernaga Grand Reserve, Founders Kentucky Bourbon Breakfast Stout, Founders Porter, Bells Hell Hath No Fury, and Terrapin Wake and Bake. This was a great end to one of the best fridays ever. If you ever go, ask for Mike he is one of the nicest and most generous bar owners I have run across.“

“Solid selection of brews from tap and from bottle. We had two pitchers of JP Oro de Calabaza at a very nice price and the owner (Ratebeerian MikeMac) brought out a 96 Sammy which was outstanding. The food was above the level of most sportspubs and the place looked like somewhere I would often visit. Hook up here with the locals for some good beer and food.“

“First thing: split up your six packs!!! The selection was very nice but it sucks when you have to buy an entire sixer. For someone cruising through town and looking for new things, not being able to buy singles of most of the beers is a major inconvenience. Otherwise, a very fine selection of local micros, Belgians, and meads. Certainly worth a stop if you’re in the area just south of Detroit.“

“I liked this place. Kind of odd with the 50s diner/sports bar/ brewpub thing going on, but at least it wasn’t trashy. Friendly service, the lady sitting at the the bar must be one of the owners or managers and was very nice along with our bartender. I believe they had 8 taps on, nothing out of this world but they were all pretty decent. I didn’t eat much but I did have the deep fried mac and cheese and it was goooood. I’d stop in again, it was a pleasant surprise.“

“Nice selection, and I’ve seen worse prices. The service wasn’t that bad but they sure as hell rush you out the door at the end of the night and it isn’t the most polite way to do it. If I get there again I’ll have to make sure I get there a tad earlier and maybe I’ll get treated better. Because of the beer, I would go back again.“
