“Don’t let the appearance fool you, it’s a place to visit. Really good selection of beers. Pick a six selection is poor but a lot of bombers and 6-packs. Good bargains, ie. all White Birch bombers for $4.99 when I visited. Friendly service and affordable prices.“

“Cool spot, nice vibe. 4 beers on, flights available. First 4 beers are forgettable, only one is really even drinkable. Hopefully the beer quality improves - way too much competition in this market to roll with these first beers. They do have a bit of a geographical edge right now though - no other breweries terribly close to these guys right now, which will help with some convenience business. But the space is nice enough that they could draw with a decent product.“

“Very nice store with a great selection of both local and out of state/country brews. Large coolers as well as shelves. No particular system, so a bit of a treasure hunt. A lot of 6-packs but no singles unless you go for 22 oz or higher.“

“This is one of the best beer stores I’ve had a chance to visit. Its a stand alone building next to a shopping center with plenty of parking. What makes this place great I’d that they have nearly everything refridgertated. They also have a lot of stuff and it’s quite a curated selection. They have a fantastic cider selection. One of the best I’ve seen. They have a pretty solid mead selection. They have a ton of reginonal and national craft. They have a cooler that’s almost entirely filled with Rogue beers. Beer is helpfully separated by country. They also have a cooler with Various verticals of Lees Harvest ales. The only debit is that the pick six section needs work but that’s what Zipp’s is for. Definitely a destination place.“

“Since their main customer base aren’t exactly craft beer fanatics, I’ve found bottles of Darkness and Pentagram here for surprisingly reasonable prices. Their overall selection is good but not as diverse as one would like. The staff are helpful though and if you want something put on hold, they have no problem doing so.“

“Visited this place last November, and thought I plopped in a rating, at that time, but, obviously, I didn’t. Has a decent feel to it. Nothing spectacular, in terms of layout, ambiance, or anything, but I’m of the position - the shittier, the better. The beer selection is fairly nice. They have a lovely selection of 22 oz. bottles, but I was surprised to notice that they were lacking on singles. I can’t say completely lacking, as I remember there being some, but nothing like Heritage. The cooler section was nice, and had a couple of beers that I didn’t see at Heritage. The prices were a little higher than what I noticed at other places, but not by much. Overall, Blue Max has a nice selection, and believe me - I had to struggle to keep my bill below $100, but I did. I think the good thing is, is that, since they don’t have singles, you’re more likely to find the beer you want, as a six-pack is a commitment vs. a single which, if you don’t like it, you purchased one. Anyways, I can’t speak to location, in terms of convenience. The service was fine, but I never really care too much about that, just as long as people aren’t rude.“

“Was at Burger Jones for lunch and hit up MGM, so swung by as it was a couple streets over. Beer clearly takes a back seat to the wine selection here. They had a weak singles section, but at least they had one. I don’t see much of a reason to go here unless you are picking up some wine and don’t want to make the short drive to the MGM or even down the road to Blue Max.“

“Wow, was shocked to see how big of a craft beer selection they had here. I have been to a couple other MGM locations and they were okay, but they had many coolers and shelves of decent brews. There were a ton of singles which was awesome, only issue was a can of Furious in the singles and it not cold. Worth a stop for sure if you are in the area or want to tick a bunch of singles.“

“Checked it out today and thought it was pretty good. The waiter Steve was a riot and I would ask for him if I went back. Tap list is about 30 long, but not terribly deep. They do flights of 4 for $7, I think 5 ounces, so pretty good deal there. There were a few beers I have not had before so that was cool, plus some local favorites. At least 2 beers I requested just kicked and it was possibly a manager that walked by and said they rotate regularly so that was cool. Food was good as well, it is a burger joint so don’t come here looking for fine dining though.“

“Stopped on a Wednesday night, Employees were restocking lots of beer, but no one offered any help to me, which actually is just fine. Lots of old beer and 1200+ beers may be accurate if you count the hundred different mass lagers they have. selection was okay, not overly impressed though.. sorted by country.. really the only gem I found was a 2007 Pannepeut. Other than that there is a LOT of beer here, and if you’re looking for obscure stuff they have that too but not a huge amount of new hot beers, or high quality beer.“

“Was here last year on a trip to the Twin Cities. A huge selection, helpful staff. Hard to choose because there’s so much. The only down side is that you need to watch the expiration dates, as some beers have expired and are still on the shelves. Still, it’s well organized (by country) and it’s one of the largest selections I’ve seen in a beer store.“

“Went here for dinner (which was fantastic) but wasn’t expecting to see a craft beer selection. Turns out, they do a pretty darn good job with craft beer! Nothing terribly rare, but I counted at least 6 beers with an overall RB score of 100, many more of high quality, and a solid selection of different brewers. Hoegaarden, Ommegang, Tyranena, Delirium, New Belgium, Alaskan, Founders, Odell, Sierra Nevada, Deschutes, Dark Horse, Stone, Mad River, Rush River, Surly, Brooklyn, Great Divide, North Coast, Breckenridge, Schells, Lagunitas, Great Lakes, Rogue, Lakefront, Summit, and more! Very nice upscale atmosphere. Highly recommend.“

“This store used to be the go-to destination beer store back in the early 2000’s and late 90s, before most people got into craft beer. I was a regular at this store back then. But, I actually had some of the staff make fun of me right to my face before for asking certain beer questions. I mean, really? You make fun of people who spend lots of money at your store. Talk about having absolutely no clue about how to run a business. The beer guy is very knowledgeable but don’t ever question him or anything he’s tried. He’s a typical beer snob where he is happy to share his knowledge about beer with you but he also looks down upon your knowledge and thinks he is far superior. Also, he recently was selling Founders Breakfast Stout with a 2 bottle limit. I mean, come on. This is not a rare or limited beer and usually is around for many months. I don’t shop here anymore.“

“Stopped by today on recommendation from my home skillet BVery. Picked up the three Lips of Faith options, each at half off! There were a couple glasses, so nabbed a Sam Adams for $2. Decent selection of singles sold individually or build your own six pack for $9. The guys at the counter were cool and we talked beer for a few minutes. Not a ton of stuff here, but there were quite a few other things on sale that will keep me coming back. Agree with JK that it is not a destination in itself, but would recommend stopping by if you are visiting Blue Max or in the area already.“

I wasn’t expecting great value here, but on the day I went, they had a very nice sale on some New Belgium stuff (La Folie for $7.99/bomber, Biere de Mars for $4.99/bomber, etc.).“

Service has been great, very friendly, but not necessarily knowledgeable about beers. Good value as I have been there during happy hour. Worth a visit if you are in the area.“

“Finally - a decent beer bar in the south Twin Cities metro. Not tremendous selection/quality, but decent for sure. And killer pizza. Tons of high-def TVs around the bar to watch sports, spacious bar area, and a patio. 2-for-1 happy hours daily.

“Impressive selection, similar price points to the TC metro. Some of the employees may be hit or miss on answering questions, so it helps to ask more than one or come more than once to the store. Selection of craft beer is separated by US and non-US, so that helps narrow things down if looking for something particular. Pretty good place, will definitely be coming back.“

“this store is awesome. It has everything Minnesota can get there hands on (beer wise). The store is huge and they use every inch of it to fill with beer. They have colors of imports and cases of american micros. I ca’t comment on service because I only talked to the guy as I was buying the beer. But I think they saw me salivating at the selection and kept there distance. This completes the twin cities trifecta or beer stores!!!“

“This is more of a standard liquor store than a high-end, high-selection beer destination, but they do better than most. Usually have a few of the brewer’s combo 12-packs, and I’ve picked up a couple of gems here on occasion - the most recent of which was Deschutes The Abyss.

Re-rate, 8/25/2011: this place is getting better and better all the time. More craft beers and mix-and-match 6-packs. Service was also terrific tonight - had a couple of great beer conversations with 2 different employees.“

“I finally made it to Blue Max after a number of trips to the Minneapolis area. I wish I had gotten here sooner. Putting the other stores in the area to shame it had a nice selection of beers from around not only the Midwest and the United States but internationally. Had it not been for limited space in the car (and a limited budget) I could have easily spent upwards of $300.

If it is available in Minnesota you’ll find it here. The highlights for me were verticals of Gale’s Old Prize Ale and Christmas Ale as well as vintages of other beers that I did not expect to see on a shelf - much less for under $4.00 each. Locally you will get your fill of Surly which was my main attraction but there were also beers from Grand Teton, Pretty Things, De Molen, and other breweries that I would love to explore. There were even a few I had never heard of it but did not pick up because of the $30 price tags.

If you are anywhere nearby you have no excuse not to make a visit here. In comparison to the usual spot that I have been going in Minneapolis this is by far better. From now on I am making a detour en route to the western suburbs.“

“Home away from home (live in Burnsvile). Such a large selection. Ask what you’re looking for, and you’ll have friendly service that gives yous plenty of suggestions. Great range of beer styles, brands, and origins. Some out-of-season seasonals are often available. Hard to decide what you want, which can make it hard to leave.“

“beer is not cheep in MN. our 9% sales tax does not help either. however, blue max’s tasty (and vast) selection does help mitigate forgone income. many specialty brews, both local, domestic, and foreign create a very decent selection. alas, if i only i could shop there every time that i was looking to pick up more beer for the fridge. drop by, it is definitely worth the trip to burnsville. “

“Massive selection and good service. I went here back in August but never submitted the review. The guy working was helpful. I saw a 6 pack of Goose Island Imp IPA but only wanted one. He split up the 6 pack without hesitation and just gave me the single. Slightly pricey but oh well.“
