80 /100 Ale House - Chelmsford (Bar) 24-26 VIADUCT ROAD Next to the train station under the arches, this was a busy sizeable bar even on a Sunday evening, particularly with the younger crowd. Really good range & choices of cask ales, keg beers & real ciders. Happy to have choices in the stronger dark beers. |
78 /100 Radio City Social (Bar) 35-36 VIADUCT ROAD Chelmsford local brewery tap room, set under the arches, a 2 minute walk from the train station past the Ale House. Tap choices of 10 of their own plus 2 guests. Friendly barman. A place to revisit |
76 /100 ANNE KNIGHT BUILDING, DUKE STREET Very close to the train station this B & K is certainly better than the average in the chain. The building it's set in, is rather impressively grand with a central staircase. Lots of seating, downstairs, upstairs & outside on the terrace. The brewing vessels to the left & the bar straight ahead. Good range of beer styles across a number of there own cask & tapped beers with plenty of guest tapped & bottled options in the fridge. Food was very good both in quality & portion size. Staff were very helpful & attentive. All in all I'd be happy to return for a longer visit one day |
66 /100 Railway Tavern (Bar) 63 DUKE ST Classic popular corner pub next to the train station with a central bar with cask pumps at both ends, with craft beers & over 50 gins also available. |
74 /100 Orange Tree (Bar) 6 LOWER ANCHOR STREET A pleasant 10 minute walk through the park, from the train station to get to this popular pub with public & saloon bars. A good range of well kept cask ales, craft beers & cider. Food is served at lunchtimes including roast on Sundays. |
56 /100 30 LOWER ANCHOR STREET Victorian L shaped pub a pleasant 10 minute walk through the park, from the train station. Also very close to the Orange Tree pub, so worthy of a stop to try a Crouch Vale beer. Choice of 3 casks from them (including a porter) on a quiet March Sunday afternoon. Friendly landlady & customers. |
82 /100 Radio City Social (Bar) 35-36 VIADUCT ROAD 16th March 2024 Nice under arch taphouse, just a stones and throw from the Ale House (also underneath the arches. |
78 /100 Radio City Social (Bar) 35-36 VIADUCT ROAD Visited 21/12/2023 with MJ. My second visit. New(ish) kid on the block in Chelmsford a few arches down from The Ale House. Quite compact inside but they pack in a lot of seating, an events stage, beer fridges with a high quality selection including some rare and expensive stuff, and a dozen or more taps behind the bar. Absolutely worth a visit when in Chelmsford. |

58 /100 Plough (Bar) 28, DUKE ST Visited on a rainy day July 2023.
Another pub close to the station. Looking as a nice pub, sportsbar.. the cricket game was on, an it seemed to be the reason why people was around.
Lots of seatings, seemed to have an area for food...
Not the best service, beers not the best condition..
They do food, we didn't have any... |

68 /100 ANNE KNIGHT BUILDING, DUKE STREET Visited 13/7/2023. I’m well used to visiting B&K’s and I like them, particularly the fact that most are situated in far away and often “exotic” English counties. It therefore seems a bit strange to have one open on home turf, with Chelmsford having been where I worked for many years. This was only a quick visit before heading to meet friends at Chelmsford Beer Festival. The building B&K now occupy is right outside the train station and quite grand - it’s great to see it being brought back to useful life as this. Very nicely set up inside and out, with plenty of seating. Staff were very friendly. Only had time for a quick half and it was up to B&K’s usual standard for cask. Will no doubt be back again for a longer visit at some point to explore more of the keg offerings which are usually better. |
72 /100 Ale House - Chelmsford (Bar) 24-26 VIADUCT ROAD Under the railway arches. Two rooms, one has a very long serving bar and some barrels with barstools, the other had large restaurant tables, some separated by anti-Covid plastic panels. There were no small tables, and I felt a bit guilty taking up a large table on my own as the place filled on a Tuesday afternoon. Nice selection of beers from the local area and afar, including six cask ales; Eight ciders-in-a-box as well. Young server had no idea what a flight was, but since he did have thirds available I made my own damn flight by ordering three of them. Pricey. Music was a bit loud and more than a bit obnoxious. Still a decent place for tons of easy ticks if that's what you're after. |
78 /100 Orange Tree (Bar) 6 LOWER ANCHOR STREET Barman was the friendliest and most helpful of this entire trip, not only discussing each of the beers with me, but also chatting about the beer scene in Chelmsford and nearby restaurants (as well as his trips to Vegas). Sadly I visited on a day when food was not available - had this information been on their website I could have selected another day to visit. That just means I have to return, however. Eight casks on offer, mostly local, plus a few Scottish ones for Burns Night. Various keg beers as well, including a nice selection of lagers, far better than the usual commercial crap lagers available in most pubs. Well worth a stop. |
66 /100 Hopsters - Chelmsford (Beer Store) 47A MOULSHAM STREET A tight and narrow shop room with a decent selection of bottled and canned craft beers. It is possible for a few people at the time to open and drink beers inside, a few chairs and tables in front of the entrance, as well. We had a couple of beers from Leigh On Sea on the spot, and bought a few more from the brewery to carry black home. Friendly service, giving us enough space for drink-in. The beer shop is located close to other beer destinations in town. (Visited with Finn 23.11.2021). |
60 /100 Hopsters - Chelmsford (Beer Store) 47A MOULSHAM STREET Small bottleshop with drink-in. |
74 /100 Hop Beer Shop (Bar) 173 MOULSHAM STREET, Perfect drink-in and some bottles for sale. Top service. |
72 /100 Orange Tree (Bar) 6 LOWER ANCHOR STREET Cozy back street pub with a local feeling. Some local beers as well. |
72 /100 Ale House - Chelmsford (Bar) 24-26 VIADUCT ROAD Under the railway. Large place with good selection. Not many local beers. |
70 /100 Railway Tavern (Bar) 63 DUKE ST Cozy pub with a handful of casks. |
52 /100 Ivory Peg (JDW) (Bar) 3-7 NEW LONDON ROAD Normal ´spoon with no local beeers. |
40 /100 Golden Fleece (Bar) 84 DUKE STREET More of a food pub than anything else, nothing remotely interesting on the ale front. Decided to have pizza here, not great at all and found the staff quite rude after I made a complaint. Avoid. |
58 /100 Plough (Bar) 28, DUKE ST Looks and feels like a chain pub, utterly sterile and quite empty on my visit. Ale selection limited, although my pint of Purity Ubu was well kept and enjoyed on a very hot day. Better off going to the Railway instead. |
68 /100 Ale House - Chelmsford (Bar) 24-26 VIADUCT ROAD Modern bar next to the rail station. Large selection of craft and cask available, my pints of a local stout were fine, quality spot on. Atmosphere a bit wanting as is the case with these places, but alright as part of a pub crawl to acquire a few ticks. |
68 /100 Railway Tavern (Bar) 63 DUKE ST Standard boozer, handy for bus and train stations. Ale selection on the safe side as noted by other reviewers. Quality not bad, a reasonable option in Chelmsford.
|
64 /100 United Brethren (Bar) 63D NEW WRITTLE STREET Visited 7/8/2020. This was one I never visited despite working in Chelmsford for over 3 years. Put right on today's Chelmsford re-visited pub crawl. Looks like a traditional ale pub from the outside but it has a much more modern feel inside aiming more at the younger crowd it seemed. A slightly eclectic collection of beer taps including one or two from Pin-Up who the owner of the pub also has a stake in, as I understand. Large patio area to the side and back with outside bar and loungers. Will pop back again when next in the area. |
70 /100 Hopsters - Chelmsford (Beer Store) 47A MOULSHAM STREET Visited 7/8/2020. Smaller than the first shop they opened in Ipswich and in Covid times there's no entry even for one person to browse. But they pack a decent selection in, mainly craft focused, at reasonable prices. After 5pm they take over the tables and chairs outside the cafe next door. Only place in Chelmsford offering such a range. |
82 /100 Ale House - Chelmsford (Bar) 24-26 VIADUCT ROAD One minute walk from the railway station, this pub is situated in two railway arches. Plenty of seating inside and some tables out back, a suntrap when the weather allows. Ten cask and seven keg lines, plus a generously stocked fridge. They also have around 10 real ciders on. Friendly chatty staff. Recommended |
68 /100 Railway Tavern (Bar) 63 DUKE ST This is a large pub close to both the Railway and Bus Stations, so very handy. A reasonable range of beers, if a little on the safe side, mostly from local breweries. It's bigger inside than you would expect, long and narrow in style. Definitely worth a visit. |
74 /100 Moulsham Tap (Bar) 53 MOULSHAM STREET This proved to be quite a quiet place on our visit, no atmosphere, the building didn't help that much, it's a little impersonal. The bar and fridges are through the back room, the bar girl was really helpful and welcoming. Not sure if this is meant to be a bottle shop but there was a good range to choose from at good prices. Easily combined with the Hop Beer Shop opposite. Definitely worth a visit. |
78 /100 Hop Beer Shop (Bar) 173 MOULSHAM STREET, Is it a bar or is it a bottle shop? It doesn't matter really, this is a really friendly place to go, lots of chat, lots of laughter in here and lots of good beer. The owner is really keen on his beers on how people perceive his pub. A really pleasant place to visit. |
66 /100 Orange Tree (Bar) 6 LOWER ANCHOR STREET Friendly, locals pub off the centre of town, close to The Queen's Head. Quite a foodie pub this one, we did eat here and the food was very good. Decent range of cask ales to be had, mostly East Anglian Breweries, but that's fine. Clean and tidy. Well worth a look. |
58 /100 30 LOWER ANCHOR STREET Traditional local in a residential part of Chelmsford. A big cricket theme going on in here, particularly with Essex County Cricket Club nearby. Mostly Crouch Vale usuals plus a couple of guests. Pleasant seating area in the conservatory. Worth visiting. |
82 /100 Ale House - Chelmsford (Bar) 24-26 VIADUCT ROAD Between the Bus Station and the Railway Station, only a few paces to both, this is in a perfect position. It occupies 2 of the railway arches and makes full use of them. Seating inside and out. There is loads of choice on the beer front, very knowledgeable and helpful barstaff. Great place. |
82 /100 Ale House - Chelmsford (Bar) 24-26 VIADUCT ROAD Great pub very close to the station. We went here after the Chelmsford beer festival just to get a couple of cask ales we wanted, but ended up staying a lot longer than expected and going through the ciders and bottle/can menu as well. Good service and a friendly athmosphere. Great 80’s music playing all evening. If in Chelmsford again I will certainly go back. |
