A nice cozy upstairs bar, dim industrial feel, My one beef was the lighting, impossibly low lights and small type on the menu made it almost impossible to read. Decent food, I did not get a chance to see the bottle list buy heard it was pretty good.

I stopped in here on two separate nights, a Wednesday night around 9 PM and a Thursday night around 5 PM. I walked here each night, but it appears there is only street parking available. So in short, donít drive here. The place is located in a fairly busy part of downtown DC with lots of bars and restaurants in the area with many catering to the craft beer and hipster crowds. Located above Birch and Barley. You can bypass Birch and Barley if you like and go straight upstairs. It looked like all the beer is upstairs, but I could be mistaken. I didnít get a very good look at Birch and Barley as I walked past. Once upstairs you can choose from tables and chairs, booths, or a bar seat. I opted for a bar seat each time. Wednesday night I was surprisingly able to get a seat at the bar immediately and Thursday was easy because I was there so early. The service was fantastic both nights. They keep more people behind the bar than any other place Iíve ever been and because of that they were able to keep up with everybody. I never got all the way to the bottom of my glass before I was being asked if I wanted to try anything else. They also kept my water glass filled without having to ask. I really liked that. Awesome service! The beer selection lives up to the hype. They probably had more than the 500 listed on here, but I have no idea how many they actually did have. It was impressive. The taps were my favorite part, though. They had a lot of great offerings, more than half of which I had never had. The cask offerings were great as well with traditional english cask styles and some american ones that suited the system well. The food available upstairs were mostly appetizer centric. I split the tater tots, shishisto peppers, and garlic cheese fritters with a few other guys. All were pretty solid and I particularly enjoyed the peppers. The food prices were fair, the tap and cask prices were fair, but the bottle prices, thatís where my heartburn with their pricing is located. The bottles we actually did buy were very overpriced. When I go back, I will most likely stick to the taps and leave the bottles alone. Overall, this place is awesome and I will be back anytime I am in town.

(Visited 07/2014): Churchkey is located on 14th Street in downtown DC. We took a cab from our hotel so I am unsure what the parking situation is. The restaurant is upstairs from Birch & Barley.

There is a small patio out front for the restaurant, and the bar is upstairs. The interior is dark with a long and narrow floor plan. The bar runs nearly the entire length along the right side, and there are raised tables opposite. Red walls, exposed HVAC and brick give the place a slightly industrial feel. Taps and coolers behind the bar give a sense of how many beers are available.

Churchkey shares a beer list with Birch & Barley. There are over 50 beers available on draught, including many breweries from the region like DC Brau and Devils Backbone, plus other domestic craft brewers like Terrapin and Perennial. Additionally there are some imports on tap from the likes of 3 Fonteinen and Get Radical. The bottle selection numbers in the hundreds, with many craft breweries around the world represented, including a lot of seasonals and rarities. We shared a bottle from Strangeways. Samples are available.

Service on a busy weekday evening was good. The server was knowledgeable about the beer menu and was attentive throughout our visit.

We did not have any food, as we had just eaten downstairs.

Overall this place is deservedly at the top of beer spots to visit in DC.

Great hang upstairs here, with a more relaxed and laid-back environment in the long bar, but with a similarly exceptional beer selection. Great service, smart folks. Absolutely essential stop.

Certainly a world class beer bar. Odd place, looks like a old loft filled with fake decorations almost, something of a Arabian Nights theme. Excellent service. A lot of great drafts and a superb bottle list. The negative: damn expensive. Many bottles are 50$ or more. Overall, this is a great place. Iíd go back a ton if I was local.

Great spot right in the heart of dc. Got here at 4 on a Friday and sat at the bar for at least 3 hours enjoying 4 oz pours of many different, amazing beers. The food was excellent and when they mixed up our food order, we not only got to keep the extra food but they also gave us free beer for the inconvenience. The ships hit peppers, chicken wings and pepperoni flat bread were all top notch. Staff was extremely knowledgable. The tap and bottle list was extensive and well curated but slightly pricy. Beer on the lists is organized according to flavor profile which was a little disorienting at first but ended up being something I really enjoyed. Modern, hipsterish vibe with large, comfortable seats at the bar. The 4 oz tasters were served in snifters. Really pleasant and laid back and made it so I was very comfortable while needing out over the selection. Definitely a must stop location. One of the best beer bars I ever been to. I drove 2 hours each way to get here (had a sober driver on the way back) and it was totally worth it. Highly Recommended .

Stopped by here late on a Thursday night. I got lucky with parking, found a spot on the street very close by. Walk up the stairs, and then wow... the area is amazing. I felt like I was dreaming, this is what itís like when I dream of going to a magical beer bar. Kegs and exotic bottles of beer everywhere. I sit down at the bar, the barstools are like pilot seats, with backrests and armrests. The bartender was one of the friendliest most helpful knowledgeable guys Iíve ever interacted with. The tap list was amazing, I had to stare at it for 10 minutes before getting my first sample. And the "4oz tasters" are actually snifters filled closer the 6oz mark. Such an amazing place. Delivers on the hype.
