| Borresteijn (55), Amsterdam, Netherlands | | August 27, 2008 A 5 minute walk from my appartment. I often invite my friends over from my hometown to enjoy the IJ-beers, so everytime I visited the place I had a great time. The place itself is very shabby, located in an old bathing house, and it shows. The terrace underneath the windmill is very nice and pittoresque btw. Inside is packed everytime, but if you come in early you might be able to capture a table. Quality of the taps is not always top-notch (butter/acid), but prices are low and overall the beers are excellent. Good cheese and saucages as food. | | JoeinUccle (138), Brussels, Belgium | | May 20, 2008 Maybe the shabbiest, dirtiest brewpub Ive ever visited in any country... but I liked that about it. The place isn’t putting on airs here. It’s simply giving you a room in which to drink its fine beers. We had ’em all but our favorite by far was the zippy Plzen, freshly hoppy and refreshing. All the beers were in top condition, possibly nitrogenated based on creamy head and mouthfeel. Bar girls were quick and friendly. Packed to the gills with locals and a few tourists. Really looking forward to coming back someday for a proper session. | | Slopoke (10), San Francisco, California | | May 5, 2008 Love this place. Incredible beer from a tiny windmill. All of their offerings are good, but the Zatte is exceptional, a triple with a smooth drinkability that is not associated with such big beer. They also have a very clean Wit beer, coriander, and wheat flavors, that go good on the rare hot days in A’dam. Never had a problem with the smoke or the service, one whole side of the building opens to a great lil beergarden. and there is at least 2 people behind the bar when I have visited. Pleasantly located outside the rings of the city, but close enough to walk from Centraal. The only thing I don’t like about the place is the limited hours. | | M0RHI (26), Luxembourg, Luxembourg | | February 10, 2008 Lovely little brewpub that was just down the road from where I was staying, and a nice step away from the hustle and bustle of life in Amsterdam. Old lady behind the bar was very helpful. Pub was full of locals by the time we left, a little smoky, but it all adds to the ambiance. Quite a selection, few more on bottle too. Bit rough around the edges, but I liked that. All in all nice pub with some great ales. | | HenrikSoegaard (45), Randers, Denmark | | December 15, 2007 Nice brewpub visited by locals, very cosey and nice beers. Too bad we only visited the brewery threw the windows.... | | altonbrownd (77), Amsterdam, Netherlands | | December 9, 2007 Nice brewpub somewhat off the beaten track but nice visiting because the beer is great - especially the Flo - and one of only a few A’dam-based brewers. Bonus points for being in a windmill. | | ogivlado (145), Zagreb, Croatia | | October 18, 2007 Lots of old beer bottles on the wall (more than 1000), some old and some new white tiles, old kitchen tables, quite decrepit interior overall. You have to order at the bar, but there was only one pissed waitress. I’ve been there for more than 2 hours and waitress didn’t smile, not even once. Behind glass door are brewing equipment with big beer tanks. Except the waitress very nice place. | | slimchill (57), Austin, Texas | | September 30, 2007 [ Updated September 15, 2008 ] Really nice spot with great beers and a nice staff. A bit crowded both times I went, but worth it, especially if the patio is available. The atmosphere outdoors can‘t be beat. | | IPFreely (92), Lewiston, New York | | September 28, 2007 I really enjoyed my stop here. It’s a bit out of the way, but it’s such a cool little place. It’s a smallish building at the base of a massive windmill right on the river. We had great service from the young lady working behind the bar. It was pretty slow because it had just opened, but the people in there seemed like regulars/locals. They didn’t have a ton of beer available, but I really dig this brewery’s beers. If you have the opportunity to get out of the tourist area for a while I definitely recommend it. | | Rastacouere (475), Montréal, Quebec | | September 4, 2007 A fair walk out of Amsterdam’s very centre, but a friendly, very laid-back place. Watch for the limited opening hours though. They had 6 beers on draught when I was there, but unfortunately not the Vlo which I had to get a bottle from in a store as they don’t sell any at the brewery. Still, I considered it a nice experience, the beers are very solid and great to try from the tap: as fresh as it gets. Minimalist decoration, only a bar, picnic tables and a bottle collection. A nice place where time flows and locals seem to have a good time rather than tourists. Perhaps not worth the detour if you don’t have a couple of days in Amsterdam though. |
