54 AMBIANCE 1/5 SERVICE 5/10 SELECTION 10/15 FOOD N/A VALUE 9/10 OVERALL 11/20
The beer place at Viking Lineís other (and slightly newer) HEL-STO liner, m/s Mariella. Used to be pretty identic to Captainís Corner @ the other ferry, but a year or so ago they decided to dump a biggish Spanish sparkling-wine themed bar/gambling- place in the restaurant area and combine this [formerly] cozy, dark english, place with the disco. Ambiance has dropped since dramatically, as itís now haunted by loud music, teens and others just wanting the lappare&shotti (peeíníshit) specials.
The beer manu is pretty static, changing only about once a year, but they do get occasional batches of nice fresh Stallhagen brews (itís a Ňlandic company, and tey stoip by Marienhamn each trip). But even though the selection isnít that wide, itís surprisingly well designed. Thereís some good abbeys, IPAs, quality wheats. Not really too rare ones, but good examples of each style. And, in Finnish standards, cheap. E.g., right now a brewdog hardcore will set you back about Ä4.5 served at the bar, and they sell their beers take-away cheaper than Iíve seen anywhere (<2Ä bottle).

Goudanband. Thatís all you need to know. Not just that, but because theyíre at sea theyíre allowed to sell it to you closed, to take away. Buy one more than you need and give it to me to thank me for this advice ;-)

A decent pub found in the most unusual place - a cruise ship sailing between Helsinki and Stockholm (where the tax-free shops only sell cheap lagers). Selection is quite small, but much - as itís tax-free - cheaper than in other pubs in Helsinki or Stockholm. If youíre at M/S Mariella, this is the only decent place to spend time at - while watching the direct sea view. At 04/2006 they served, for example, Huvila Blonde (draught, 5.30Ä/0.5l), Chimay Blue (3,80Ä/0.33l), Goudenband (4,80Ä/0.375l), Westmalle Dubbel (3.80Ä/0.33l), Traquair House Ale (3.80Ä/0.33l), Anchor Steam, as well as several weizens and lagers. Smoke is in better control than in the Captainís Corner
(at M/S Gabriella). They gave a tall lager glass for the Goudenband, so the staff is still learning... The Belgians were not ice-cold, which was nice.
