Commercial Description:
Winter’s getting pretty old, isn’t it? Well, springtime is on the way, and we think it’s time to perk up. As strange as it may seem, coffee is intricately entwined with the story of modern stouts. Until the 1700’s, most dark beers were smoky in flavor – the malts were dried over wood fires. It was the development of coffee roasting technology that soon allowed brewers to achieve clean roasted flavors in their malts. It’s not surprising that the fruit and roast notes in fine coffees meld perfectly with roasted malt flavors. For our coffee we went directly to the ultimate source, Duane Sorenson of the famous Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Stumptown originally hails from Portland, Oregon, but they’ve just started roasting in Red Hook, Brooklyn also, and we’re pleased to welcome them to the neighborhood. We’ve brewed the beer with solid British and American malts, and then “intensified” our stout with Duane’s Guatemalan Full City roast beans, giving the beer a wonderfully complex coffee aroma and flavor.

This beer pairs beautifully with burgers, venison, duck, desserts, and….ummm…brunch. Yeah, you bet. So if winter’s tired you out, try Brooklyn Intensified Coffee Stout. It’s a stimulus package we can all believe in.

Malts: British Pale Ale, Crystal and Chocolate malts, American black malt and black barley
Other sugars: Raw demerara, Malawi
Hops: Willamette
Intensification: Stumptown Guatemalan Full City Roast Coffee Beans
O.G.: 18.8° Plato (1076)
ABV: 8.0%

Black with a small brown head. Intense is the right word, mostly coffe, sharp hard roasted coffe. Flavour is sharp coffe beans, roasted malt and light dark bittere chocolate. Has a long lasting very bitter coffe loaded finish. I like coffe..

Draft at Redbones in Somerville. I got this for my buddy and I had the 2007 vintage Black Chocolate Stout they had on tap; this was nice, but can’t compete with that. Pours a very dark brown with an inch-thick tan head. Aroma is heavy on coffee and roasted malts, with some chocolate and brown sugar. The flavor is also roasty, with a lot of coffee and notes of earthy hops, brown sugar, nuts, and toast. Medium-full bodied, with moderate carbonation and not quite the smoothness of other imperial stouts. Good beer, and I’m not a coffee drinker.

Sample at HopCat. Black pour with a medium tan head. Aroma of coffee, a bit of fruit and malt. Coffee flavor with a bit of fruitiness before a caramel finish. Okay, but I prefer my coffee beers to be more in-your-face.

On draft some time ago (date not mentioned) at Rustico in Alexandria VA. Pitch black color with a small wispy dark tan head (though it may have been sitting around for a few minutes before it got to me - didn’t see the actual pour). Aroma is strong coffee, with notes of toffee, chocolates. Flavor is roasted coffee, chocolate. Smooth and creamy, the beer finishes quite nicely.

Appearance: Arrived at my corner of the bar a jet black body with a lasting half inch of sandy-colored foam riding on top. Smell: Roasty robust mix of blackened barley and chilled morning time coffee with notes of darkened grains and baker’s chocolate. Taste: Richly roasted malts soothed and smoothed over with sweetish tastes of chocolate and even dark caramel. Then you get a roasty boost from the Lightly earthy hop bitterness component along with the imparted roastiness from the blackened malts. Though some sugary influences perk up in the back end, giving it a finish akin to an iced coffee sans cream. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Fairly smooth mouthfeel. Drinkability: This one is pretty good for a coffee stout and, as always, I do enjoy seeing a brewery play around and experiment with new brews.

Tried at Alesmith tasting room. Tons and tons of coffee aroma. Black, thick head. Taste is thin diacetyl yuckiness.
