Commercial Description:
Cask, Special;
The brewer from this famous brewery has visited Marston’s Brewery, Burton upon Trent, to re-create this classic beer, renowned by beer critics and drinkers throughout the world. Virtually black in colour, this is brewed using four varieties of malt (pilsner, Munich, brown and caramel), providing intense aromas of toastiness, chocolate, coffee and liquorice. It is strongly hopped to provide an impressive, bitter finish to this outstanding, complex imperial stout-style beer. Hops used: Saaz

Cask at ’Spoons, Milton Keynes in ’Spoons Real Ale Festival, April ’09. Near black with a beige head. Pleasant aroma with plum, liquorice and a little ash. Ashy liquorice taste with a nice sweet alcoholic hit as if someone at the bar spilt a little of their gin and tonic into it. Mid bitter finish. Not quite chuggable enough for a porter, but nevertheless a highly enjoyable beer.

A Mes rate. Cask handpull at Baker Street ’Sporks.
Pitch black with a thin but good beige head. Massive toasty chewy malt. Loads of liquorice, tangy bitterness and lots of dark fruit. Good smoky peaty notes too. Really good actually. Only thing letting it down is a hint of diacetyl in the aroma. Despite that, it’s an easy second best of the cockily titled "World’s Biggest International Real Ale Festival". Mainly because pretty much all the others are shite but whatever.

Cask at HBF 09. Black, tiny coarse head, fading out quickly. Berryish licorice nose, raw coffee beans, mostly just acidic and straightforward licorice syrup. Very bland, simple flavor with charcoal, stale coffee, licorice, tangy unpleasant hops and gluey notes in the finish, overall feels like a bad homebrew. Watery, almost flat palate. A shadow of a man.

Handpulled cask at JDW Watford. Black with a thin tan suddy head. Burnt rather than roasted malt appologetically balanced by sickley sweetness. Not what I’d call a decent porter.

cask 200ml as left over gift on Urho’s Sahti day’s 2009 murky black no head. Strong roasted malts body. Round almost smooth if I start to compare it to Koff Porter bottled version. Dash of sulfur decent hops. Tasty anyway.

Cask, Last Plantagenet, Leicester. Black with a small beige head. Aromas are coffee and liquorice with herbal notes and rich, dark chocolate. Flavours are rich coffee with dark chocolate malts. Dry and moreish with an oily palate. Bitter grapefruit towards the finish. Some light berry notes. Woody and dry on the aftertaste. Slightly gritty but strangely all the better for it.
