Commercial Description:
Contract brewed for Schmaltz Brewing Company. Sacred Species No.2 YEAR OF THE DATE "The righteous shall flourish like the Date palm." Psalm 92:12. Hark! The second coming of REJEWVENATOR, infused for 2009 with the sacred DATE. Jewish tradition celebrates two New Years: The first in Spring after the barley harvest. The High Holidays in Fall mark the creation of the world. Harvest to harvest - the perfect bookends for deliciousness! Dates were used to sweeten beer in Ancient Egypt as early as 3500 BCE. Pliny the Elder, 1st c. Roman naturalist, lauded Judea’s Dates for their succulence and sweetness. So important for food and shelter, the Date palm became a symbol for the Kingdom of Judea, stamped on the ancient and modern Israeli Shekel coins. Shaking your Lulav on Sukkot and covering your kosher Sukkah demands Date palm leaves. Palm Sunday reenacts the procession of Jesus into Jerusalem. In Arabic, "Tamr" is the 4th stage of a Date’s ripening. Mohammed: "Whoever eats seven fresh Tamr fruits at breakfast shallrise above magic and poison on that day." The Hebrew word for Date palm is "Tamar", commonly describing the beauty and elegance of a woman. Solomon’s sister was named Tamar. "The only difference between a date and a job interview is that not many job interviews have a chance that you’ll end up naked at the end of it." -Jerry Seinfeld. Like its Latin genus the Pheonix, rise and shine with our newest Double Date Shmoppelbock - and flourish! L’Chaim!

Dates, raisins, brown sugar and raisins in the nose. Clear, deep, dark ruby brown coloured body is topped by a decent, fine bubbled, off white head that recedes to a lasting cover. Dates, raisins and figs are sweet up front but hop bitterness is quite pronounced and balances things out in the finish. Medium body is quite dry with moderate carbonation. Tulip glass. Just above fridge temperature. Bottle purchased at Brewery Creek in Aug-09.

Very red with brown hints, a tall tan cap floats on top. The retention was ok, some lacing was left behind when pouring into my wide open mouth. Aroma seems so very concentrated, I can smell figs, dates, hops, wood, some spice. Thick in your face flavor it’s so thick with flavor its chewy but seems to consist of nothing but intensity. There is so much heavy malt flavor here its blowing my mind. Toffee, wood, mild burning alcohol all with the flavor of dates. There is this bitter in the finish that never ever seems to develop fully if you know what I mean. I’ m loving this full thick mouth feel I think it’s my favorite part of this beer. I can start to pick out the Belgium double aspects of this brew (wheat malt) it blends very well with the doppelbock portions. Great beer drink it if you can get it.

Bomber from Holiday Wine Cellar. Very interesting concept here. Pours a lovely deep ruby-garnet with three fingers of beige foam. Aroma of yeast, sweet malts, overripe dark fruit (dates?). Flavor is sweet caramel, strong dark fruit, and some spice. Dry finish with some alcohol. Seems to me more abbey dubbel than doppelbock. Interesting, though. (105, 252)

22oz. Bottle: Aroma of malt, burnt and toasted caramel, light dates, slight dark ripe fruit, black bread, and rye. Poured deep amber/orange/copped in color with a large, creamy, dense, tan head that diminished but lasted throughout. Slightly cloudy. Sparkling. Full of tiny particles throughout. Flavor is medium to heavily sweet and slightly bitter. Tastes of malt, toasted caramel, dates, raisins, light dark ripe fruit, slight honey, light hops, light yeast, and light minerals. Medium body. Viscous, coating texture become dry. Average carbonation. Medium to heavily sweet, lightly bitter, malt, dark ripe fruit, date, raisin, yeast, and hop finish is a bit sticky and slightly dry. 7.8%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

Sampled on our 20th anniversary beer tour, in bottle. Medium brown color, if there is such a thing. Tan lacing on top lasts and looks celestial. Aromatic nose, like winter fruit. Complex flavors unfold and are hard to describe. Toffee, roasted malt, exotic fruits, wilderness, cranberries, nuts - a veritable liquid trail mix with a finishing hop punch on the end.

Bomber (2010) into a tulip. Pours a cool red/brown with a full 2-finger head. The aroma is a strange combo of fruity esters and dark malts. The flavor is fruity but dark with a hint of yeast and alcohol. Meh.

(bottle - 22 oz) Copper pour with a thin layer of foam. Subtle and malty aroma with some mild sweetness and light hints of dates and raisins. Very sweet and malty at the beginning with a lot of caramel and fruit coming through. No one particular fruit is discernible, but there’s lots of fruit flavors. Slightly bitter at the end with very well hidden alcohol.
