Commercial Description:
Scratch #20 has been dubbed Apollo Imperial Ale because of our experimentation with a new hop variety. Apollo hops are high alpha acid with an intense aroma. Married with other high alpha hops, with almost two pounds of hops added per barrel produced, AIA has an intense staying power in the back of the throat. After a long discussion between Chris, John and the brewers, they dubbed this hop flavor stinky grapefruit with a hint of perfume. The dark color might lead you to believe the some malt may shine through; but no, the hops are the true player in this ale. Scratch #20 serves a dual purpose since it will also appear as The Drafting Room’s Anniversary Ale for 2009. We brewed a bit more to serve the brewery and The Drafting Room, but get it while when you see it.

This delicious impy IPA pours a clear and beautiful amber color with a rich and thick off-white head. The head gives way to some nice lacing left around the glass. The nose is full of hops, pine, citrus, but is balanced nicely with some sweet malts and some yeasty/bready notes. The body is fairly smooth and drinkable, and the flavors are delicious. I got a nice smack in the face with some piney, citrusy and floral hops toward the back end of the flavors and into the finish.

12 oz scratch 20 bottle from Capones. Pours a murky amber with orange edges sitting underneath an average sized thick frothy off white head. Initial aroma was loaded with pineapple followed by citrus fruit, slight spice and caramel. Thicker bodied with fairly strong carbonation, or perhaps that’s just my lingering sore throat from my operatinon last week. Flavor is bitter through and through with lots of citrus with some grainy malts in the background. Solid and drinkable, worthy of drinking again.

( 12oz bottle labeled Tröegs Scratch 20 thanks to bu11zeye) Pours cloudy orange with oily bubbles. Nose of tropica hops, bready and yeast. Taste oily grapefruit, esters, fruity with a nice linger. This is well balanced.

bottle. pours a dark amber orange with a fluffy medium offwhite head. leaves some spotty lace on the glass. aroma of pineapple, melon, caramel, grapefruit, and a little booze. flavor is a big smack of pine up front, with some grapefruit, tangerines, and some bready, nutty, caramel malt backing. nice body. This was pretty damn good. Like a doughy caramel with a some spruce and pineapple. I know that doesn’t sound very good, but it worked. this was a great beer. awesome balance as well.

Bottle, as Scratch 20, from Capone’s (Norristown, PA). Pours orange-brown, capped with a modest sized cream colored head. Hop-forward aroma, with notes of grapefruit and earth, with a little caramel in the background. Caramel malt hits the palate for an instant, then is overcome by the hops, with grapefruit, pine, and earth the dominant flavors. Earthy hop resins cling to the palate for a slightly astringent finish.

On top at the brewery. Described as an imperial pale with an IBU of 135. Amber in color with a fine citric aroma. Well filtered. Medium bodied with lots of caramel in the flavor to back up the hop attack. For a very hoppy beer the caramel is strong. The hops are very astringent and leave a lasting medicinal quality on my tongue. Hard to finish.
