I think Adnams has sold itself short here. Marketed as a the beer with body and flavour, it fell considerably short of my expectations. Crimson-brown in colour without head, the light malt flavours were sedated. Looking the business, this beer lacked guts and body, but had the bitter finish common of its pears, e.g. London Pride, Priest. Over rated by those who pretend.

Bottle. A - Reddish brown/copper color. Creamy off-white head, medium sized. S - Fruity smells along with some slight orange hops and toffee malt. T - A good amount of dark fruit and spice (kind of like a slightly toned down Quad). A good amount of caramel and maltiness up front. There is slight hopiness that provides a touch of citrus and earthiness that evens out the beer. Alcohol taste is slightly there (more than I would expect) and gives it a warming affect. M - Pretty creamy and smooth, medium bodied, and low carbonation. D - The flavors are bold and fairly strong, yet balanced. The alcohol is present and warming but not so much that I would feel bad having another one. Really a pretty drinkable beer. Notes: Good, balanced beer. Most of the flavor is malt and fruit, but it has enough hop flavor to balance out.

(Rating #2910)

500ml bottle from LCBO. I’ve had this many times before but didn’t rate it until now. Pours hazy brown with a very thin white head. Hoppy nose with hints of almond, raisin and yeast. Sweet, fruity flavour with notes of red berries and brown sugar. Chewy mouthfeel. Full bodied. Finish is acidic with a quite good bitterness.

500 mL bottle. Pours dark ruby-amber, little to no head. Aroma is a bit malty (caramel, oats) but with a fruity sweetness as well. Taste is of moderate fruity sweetness which fades into a light roasty bitterness. Alcohol hits the palate strongly at first sip, but is barely noticeable afterwards. Full body with a lasting finish. Quite nice - very refreshing for a stronger beer.

Light brown body, with a ruby glow to it. Rich off-white head, with some good lacing, and pretty good retention. Not very carbonated. Loads of fruit notes in the nose; cherries, raisins, grapes. Slightly nutty, with a good caramel malty backbone. Somewhat floral as well, with a faint hint of citrusy hops. I could pick up a little bit of the yeast, which have a very English aroma. So far so good. There was a lot going on in the taste. First I got a very fruity malt taste (with hints of cherry, dried fruit, and red grape), somewhat sweet, with loads of caramel and a hint of roastiness. Then the bitterness kicked in, leaving some floral hop notes on the palate. This beer indeed had a fruit cake-like taste to it, and reminded me of a red wine or port. The finish was bitter, with some breadiness to it. Somewhat boozy (but not over the top), with a winter warmer feel to it. Medium-bodied (or slightly thicker than medium) and very lightly carbonated. A touch of spiciness on the tongue could be felt. Not the most drinkable ale, and definitely not a session one. However, it was quite pleasant to drink. I also paired it with some aged cheddar cheese, which was an excellent combination.

500ml bottle. Thick and creamy tan head with a mix of large and small bubbles. Copper to brown in colour with wonderful aromas of spiced preserved fruit and fruit cake. Strong warming flavours that penetrate all parts of the mouth. A nice unexpected surprise.

Dark amber/brown with a decent tan/off-white head. The nose is full of sweet malt, deep (prunes) and vinous fruits and a light nutty character, smells a bit like an english Barley Wine. Taste is more of the same, but with hint of hops, some chocolate and tobacco. Easy drinking, paired well with my steak, and in my opinion better than the cask version
