Commercial Description:
What does it mean? Yes, what indeed does it all mean. Meaning of course is elusive and illusive. It can’t or shouldn’t be found on this bottle. Should it? Yet what if it was? Would you begin to look for pearls of wisdom or life direction on a beer label? Perhaps it’s been there all along. Since meaning is a mere illusion, perhaps we shouldn’t let it have any influence on our destiny. This particular beer refused to succumb to the illusion of meaning or allow capricious parameters to have any influence on its own fermented fate. Are we even asking the right question? Are you feeling frustrated in the emptiness? If so, that could be because someone got to this beer before you, and thus there’s a reason for that emptiness. It’s empty. And if so, perhaps there indeed is not any meaning for you here after all. Style over Substance, or Substance over the scriptures of Style? The latter, thank you very much. Twice.

11.2oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a foamy tan head. Aroma leaves a lot to be desired. Nothing really registers except for some spice and malt. Hope it tastes better than it smells...No, it really doesn’t. Taste is of malt, spice, caramel, and a slight hop bitterness. Decent lingering taste of resiny hops. Has some definite pineapple flavors in there. Didn’t expect that. . There is also a strange amount of pepper that tends to linger. Alcohol doesn’t seem present at all. Mouthfeel is medium and sticky. It drinks surprisingly easy. I’m not sure what the hell to make of it. I could do without the pepper though.

10 oz tulip glass at the Blue Tusk (Syracuse). 06FE10.

App.: Deep brown-black with a tan head. Aroma: Spicy and peppery, very deep black coffee and dark chocolate, very dark black strap molasses, salty licorice, tons of resinous, green, earthy, piny, mean hops, this beer means business...so angry. Palate: Medium body, prickly effervescence. Flav.: Dark and spicy, peppery, green peppers and green tomato vines, really dark, pine, resin, stark fruitiness, mean black chocolate, so dark and heavy; some alcohol, astringent, off-dry with significant bitterness.

An intriguing and hard-core brew that demands respect. And $9.

Draft at Duckworth’s in Mooresville. Good beer but... yawn. I mean, honestly, these collaborations and one-time brews... are they ever anything but a huge, dark ale of some sort? I guess they vary slightly but... I’m waiting for something truly different.

This is one dark american strong ale. Completely black with a thin head. Aroma is similar to a thin stout as well. Not as thick and chewy on the gums as a stout of this magnitude, but it sure has the chalky roasted flavor there. It really warms the mouth with it and opens up to more of the sweeter gritty chocolate notes.

12 oz bottle from a lager glass. Pours with a nice, 2 finger foamy head. Leaves thick lacing on the glass. Pour is very dark, the slightest hint of redness. Aroma of floral hops, pine, and light malt. Maybe a faint hint of citrus acidity in the nose. Taste is very complex. Very smooth mouthfeel. First smooth malt is noticed, followed by a hop bitterness. Lingering mouthfeel of doughy bread. There is really a lot going on here. Taste of an IPA with the mouthfeel of a stout and the finish of a trappist ale. This is one of the best beers I have ever tried.

Hoppy aroma of pine needle, thistle, and dark roasted malt, probably the most pine I have encountered in one beer. Mahogany to black color, thick beige head, good lacing. Charred oak, a touch of molasses, dark roasted malt, quite a bit of licorice, and lots of pine, which remain well after swallowing. Lacking in carbonation. Extremely well put together. Complex without being a chore to drink. Alcohol well concealed. Special beer, that many can appreciate.

A: The pour into a snifter gives a deep, dark black color with a small bit of off-white head. S: The smell is very malty--roasted malt, that is. Some floral and bitter hops are there, but a bit more muted than I would have expected. T: The flavor is not quite the "double black Belgian IPA" as was advertised by Stone. A lot of roasted malt flavor with a fair bit of grapefruit in the middle. The finish is nice and bitter. M: Despite a rather flat sound and looking pour, the carbonation is quite abundant. It helps to lighten up what I think would otherwise be quite a heavy beer. D: The beer is good. Don’t get me wrong, but it’s not exactly what I was expecting. I think the classification of "American Strong Ale" is much more deserved than the double black IPA that was announced previously by Stone. A solid beer, but I don’t see myself spending another $7 on it.

Pours a dark brown with a thin tan head. aroma is of carmel, chocolate, and sweet malts. flavor is not has hoppy has expected, dominated by carmel and chocolate with some pine noble hop notes, and some belgian yeast. has a thin, watery mouthfeel with a sopay aftertaste. overall, a pretty good but not top tier strong ale.
