Nothing really registers except for some spice and malt. Hope it tastes better than it smells...No, it really doesn’t. Taste is of malt, spice, caramel, and a slight hop bitterness. Decent lingering taste of resiny hops. Has some definite pineapple flavors in there. Didn’t expect that. . There is also a strange amount of pepper that tends to linger. Alcohol doesn’t seem present at all. Mouthfeel is medium and sticky. It drinks surprisingly easy. I’m not sure what the hell to make of it. I could do without the pepper though. probstk (1188), Nepean, Ontario, Canada

App.: Deep brown-black with a tan head.
Aroma: Spicy and peppery, very deep black coffee and dark chocolate, very dark black strap molasses, salty licorice, tons of resinous, green, earthy, piny, mean hops, this beer means business...so angry.
Palate: Medium body, prickly effervescence.
Flav.: Dark and spicy, peppery, green peppers and green tomato vines, really dark, pine, resin, stark fruitiness, mean black chocolate, so dark and heavy; some alcohol, astringent, off-dry with significant bitterness.
An intriguing and hard-core brew that demands respect. And $9. biznizness (979), Mooresville, North Carolina, USA

I mean, honestly, these collaborations and one-time brews... are they ever anything but a huge, dark ale of some sort? I guess they vary slightly but... I’m waiting for something truly different. | 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 22, 2010 This is one dark american strong ale. Completely black with a thin head. Aroma is similar to a thin stout as well. Not as thick and chewy on the gums as a stout of this magnitude, but it sure has the chalky roasted flavor there. It really warms the mouth with it and opens up to more of the sweeter gritty chocolate notes. promtheus (155), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 10/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Feb 21, 2010 12 oz bottle from a lager glass. Pours with a nice, 2 finger foamy head. Leaves thick lacing on the glass. Pour is very dark, the slightest hint of redness. Aroma of floral hops, pine, and light malt. Maybe a faint hint of citrus acidity in the nose. Taste is very complex. Very smooth mouthfeel. First smooth malt is noticed, followed by a hop bitterness. Lingering mouthfeel of doughy bread. There is really a lot going on here. Taste of an IPA with the mouthfeel of a stout and the finish of a trappist ale. This is one of the best beers I have ever tried. obguthr (1227), Poquoson, Virginia, USA
| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 19/20 | Feb 21, 2010 Hoppy aroma of pine needle, thistle, and dark roasted malt, probably the most pine I have encountered in one beer. Mahogany to black color, thick beige head, good lacing. Charred oak, a touch of molasses, dark roasted malt, quite a bit of licorice, and lots of pine, which remain well after swallowing. Lacking in carbonation. Extremely well put together. Complex without being a chore to drink. Alcohol well concealed. Special beer, that many can appreciate. womencantsail (551), San Dimas, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 21, 2010 A: The pour into a snifter gives a deep, dark black color with a small bit of off-white head.
S: The smell is very malty--roasted malt, that is. Some floral and bitter hops are there, but a bit more muted than I would have expected.
T: The flavor is not quite the "double black Belgian IPA" as was advertised by Stone. A lot of roasted malt flavor with a fair bit of grapefruit in the middle. The finish is nice and bitter.
M: Despite a rather flat sound and looking pour, the carbonation is quite abundant. It helps to lighten up what I think would otherwise be quite a heavy beer.
D: The beer is good. Don’t get me wrong, but it’s not exactly what I was expecting. I think the classification of "American Strong Ale" is much more deserved than the double black IPA that was announced previously by Stone.
A solid beer, but I don’t see myself spending another $7 on it. skmikeg (108), Poway, California, USA
