Commercial Description:
That time of year when the day seems to fade away. Drifting further into the darkness with each passing day. Yes, we’re letting loose, from the noose (spiced beers), that’s kept us hanging about. FADE TO BLACK – our non-traditional, kick-you-in-the-ass ale that mirrors the available sunlight from October thru March. The name will stay the same (as well as the packaging) each year, but the style won’t.

The aroma is burnt coffee malt. Nutty toffee and caramel. Hazelnut and brandy, bourbon whiskey. Appears jet black. Creamy, puffy light brown head. Intimidating. The flavor is supremely bitter. Burnt coffee and cookies. Nutty with some nutmeg and toffee sweetness. A bitter finish. Hints of chocolate and charcoal. Mocha. Feels thick and oily but with a gritty tension to it. Strong, challenging, outstanding.

Bottled. Dark brown coloured with a reddish gleam. Light brown head. Aroma of cocoa, light roast, sweetness, some fruits, spice. quite complex. Flavour of cocoa, chocolate, light liqourice, roast, syrup, brown sugar and spice. Medium to full bodied. Roasty chocolaty bitterness in the end. Very nice. Thx. to Santa mike for this.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a huge brown head. The aroma has notes of caramel, malt, and flowers. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, nuts, and a bit of wood, leading to a dry alcoholic finish.

Bottle 35,5 cl. Courtesy of madsberg. Clear reddish brown head and a small beige head. Sweet hard roasted malt in the nose. Medium body, very hard roasted malt, some vanilla and licorice. Extremely malt bitter finish - not really pleasant. 080210

I had this both on tap and in a bottle. Solid black in the glass, go figure, with a nice tan head. I remember a strong roasty nose, with definite licorice and chocolate notes. The flavor, unsurprisingly, was similar, with a strong roasted malt backbone and notes of wood, coffee bitterness, and some earthy hops. Quite a pleasure to drink. I’m just disappointed it came and went so quickly.

Reviewed 1/1/2010 (Bottled 10409): Pours a nearly pitch black color body, average tan color head, diminishing. Strong dark chocolate aroma, sweet like a milk stout. Bitter chocolate taste. Sweet. Some bitterness on the end, but balanced pretty well. Some bitter coffee taste on the end. Thick, not as bitter as it warms. somewhat chalky or something.
