Glad I still had some of this still sitting around in the fridge to put to formal testing procedures someday. I’m having this right after I had a Smith oatmeal stout, and they pour and look exactly the same, who’da thunk it. That meaning, black, with a tan head that recedes to near-nothingness pretty quickly. Got a musty aroma in the bottle (sorry, my sense of smell seems to be limited enough that my best whiffs come from when the nectar is nestled in its glass cage), and little aroma detected after that. Upon getting it into my mouth, I found it surprisingly bland and stale. I remember this from previous tastings, so it’s not an abberation with this bottle, I’m afraid. That makes downing one of these especially hard, considering we’re already dealing with a Porter here. I mean, I don’t even know if I detect any of the stuff that other drinkers claim to get that is supposed to give it complexity. Just a predominantly woody flavor and woody feeling sitting in the gut. Not the only Porter that’s done this to me, BTW. I just remember the woodiness, primarly. You definitely get a chocolatey bite in Anchor that you don’t get in this. Okay, I’ve gone on long enough, the rest isn’t notable enough to comment on so I’ll leave it there.

Bottle - Pours opaque black with a big, fat tan head. Love the aroma -- smooth, caramel malt (that seems to be in several of the GL beers) with just enough hops to balance out. There’s a little coffee, chocolate, lactose, and metal. Taste is dark burnt malt, coffee, wood, bitter chocolate. Smooth, creamy, and easy-drinking.

A nice, balanced porter that isn’t trying to blow my head off with chocolate, coffee, or ABV! Pours a clear dark brown/mahogany with a perfect sudsy cream head. Aroma is a great mix of almonds, roasted marshmallow, and earthy hops. Flavor is a bit unexpected, as the hops cut right through the chocolate and coffee base to dominate the front of the palate...slowly fades into more traditional roasty flavors. A touch thin and strong on carbonation, but it’s a tasty little brew.

A dark reddish brown porter with a thin off white head. In aroma, nice light chocolate, with mineral notes. In mouth, a bitter herbal chocolate with nutty notes, coffee grinds, not bad, medium bodied. Tasted at CNY brewfest, Feb. 6 2010.

Pours a dark ruby-tinged sable that is somewhat translucent with a decent pale tan head. Aroma is strong and smoky, mainly of fine roast coffee. Flavor is like a fine mocha, slightly sweet and with a firm molasses undertone. Texture is smooth, tingly and edgy. Definitely worthy.

Shared this with friends over spaghetti with venison meatballs. Boy did it make the meal. Appears dark brown inching toward black with a large creamy tan head. Smells of roasted malts and mocha. This is a really great porter that I did not initially anticipate. It’s robust and balanced between chocolate and dark malts with a pleasant amount of bittering hops. The body is creamy and smooth and goes down great making it very drinkable. It doesn’t try to bedazzle your palate with an overload of flavor and ingredients, but rather supplies the right touch of everything. It’s a top of the class, all-American porter.

Bottle from a trade with phaleslu. Pours brown with tan head. Aromas of roasted malts and chocolate. Roasted malts and bittersweet chocolate flavors. A touch of sweetness. Medium to full body with mild carbonation. A really nice porter. Thanks Peter.

This is good.....real good. Great balance between all the components.......extremely drinkable. Nice roasted, smokey aroma with some sweet element like cola or brown sugar. Toasty and rich on palate with creamy texture finishes with a milk chocolate element.

Pours a near black brown with a small tan head. Chocolate and roast are most pronounced in the aroma. Nice clean flavor with chocolate, roasted coffee, and tobacco. On the sweet side. Full bodied with a long bitter finish.
