Commercial Description:
Originally brewed and bottled for the 2001 National Craft Brewers Conference-a private bottling & release with no distribution. A second batch, Charlie Redux was brewed with very limited distribution. 2005 is the hat-trick batch, Charlie 1981 returns for a third time as part of John's Locker Stock!

Charlie 1981 is an unfiltered strong ale, it exhibits massive bitterness and a firm malt backbone. Hedonistic! Brewed using Pale Malt, Munich and Crystal 40 malts, Horizon, Sterling and Amarillo Hops. Estimated measurements are: 18.2 degrees Plato (OG), 3.5 Degrees Plato (TG), 75 IBU's, 8.5% ABV. Prost!

Charlie 1981 is named in honor of Charlie Papazian, president of the Association of Brewers, founder of the American Homebrewers Association and homebrewing guru. John Maier, Brewmaster for Rogue Ales, made his first batch of beer in 1981 using Papazian's influential book "The New Complete Joy of Homebrewing."

On tap at Flying Saucer KC. Poured a murky brown with an off white head. Aroma was some sweet caramel malt and lots of piney hops. Flavor is loads of hop with just enough malt to hold things together. Lots of pine and citrus with a long bitter finish.

Tap. Copper/brown pour, offwhite head. Aroma of malt, hop, and spice. Taste of bread and malt, with a pronounced hop element. Good flavor.

16 ounce pint - $7.50 at Taco Mac in Kennesaw, Georgia. Appearance: Well-hazed, dark amber-brown body akin to a glass of bread crusts topped with a cover of white foam. Smell: Malty touches of toast and toffee surrounded by strong hop notes of citrus, spice, and pine. Taste: Pale malts rounded out by some toasty and lightly sweet toffee hints. Strong, assertive hop character with big tastes of earthy spice, pine resin, and citrus pith. Boldly bitter, as one might expect. Finishes quite dry with a long, lingering bitterness and touch of alcohol warmth. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: Plenty of staunch bitterness; it’s definitely a Rogue product, alright. One pint was more than enough for me, thanks.

This thing is pretty good. Poured a caramel color with a off white head. The nose is malt, cloves, and some lighter fruit. Taste is much the same with a citrusy/piney taste as well. This is pretty good.

Pours a slightly hazy coppery brown with an off-white head. Aroma is spicy, mainly of cloves, and malty. Flavor is malty and fairly hoppy, just a little bitter with more than a hint of cloves. Texture is lively and quite tingly.

Bottle from my back log. Dark pour with off white semi tan head. Pine and caramel malt aroma. WIth a bitter bite that leaves you tasting citrus. It was good.
