Commercial Description:
The great porters of England were the inspiration for this traditional Pennsylvania-style dark beer. Four different malts contribute to its unique roasted aroma, flavor and subtle sweetness. Velvety-smooth on the tongue, you will pick up hints of coffee, caramel and chocolate in the taste.

Poured an almost opaque brown with small tan head. The aroma has some chocolate and a light roast. The flavor has some age to it. Light fruitiness and roast . Sweet finish with a light to medium body.

Had at my brother in laws house. Poured a typical medium dark brown with medium tan head. Aroma was sweet and chocolately with a tad bit of corniness and a slight lactic presence. Flavor was light on the palate, a bit watery, with lots of brown sugar chocolate presence and a nice creaminess. Overall, reminded me more of a vienna or heavier american dark lager than a traditional porter. Overall, enjoyable, but not fabulous.

Cola like pour with a short, light tan head and spots of lacing. The aroma was roasted malts and a touch of citrus. Not much sweet caramel or chocolate working in this one. The flavor was roasted malts and light citrus. The mouthfeel was on the thin side. Pretty forgettable.

Light roasted aroma. Mainly roasted malt on the tongue, although there does seem to be some coffee/burnt toffee component. Too watery in the body. Overall, nothing great.

12 ounce bottle. Served in a mug, the beer pours dark brown with an inch frothy brown head. Head retention and lacing are both OK. Aroma is milk chocolate, caramel malt, coffee and brown sugar. The taste is similar to the aroma, with some slight hoppiness in the finish. Also, the taste isn’t quite as strong as the aroma. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s coating and slick, and has moderate carbonation. Drinkability is good, it goes down easy and it’s enjoyable to drink. Not a bad choice as a session beer, either. I think this is a good overall brew, and with the low price (compared to other similar porters), I’ll definitely buy this again in the future.

Pours dark black, slightly oily with a small tan head. Nice roasted aroma, malts, chocolate and a little coffee. Mocha flavor, very pleasantly surprised by this one, only $6 for a six pack.

Weak aroma of dark toasted malts with vanilla hints. Black, thin tan head..Thin mouthfeel, Sour charcoal flavor. Thin mouthfeel. More of a schwarzbier than anything else. I always try to rate without looking at how others have rated it. I was amazed to find so many people have rated this so high. Although there didn’t seem to be anything off about my sample, I had trouble finishing it.

Bottle. Haven’t had this in some time but i’m sure this will be above the grain. Pours a black body with a tan head. Chocolate malt, mineral notes, roasted malt, some darker but dry velvet like fruit. Session able stout.

Bottle. I have to admit, I had low expectations ... but this started off with a very nice pour ... dark, deep, with a cascading, if quick, foamy top. It settled into a more mere mortal-looking dark beer, but it was a nice start. The aroma was an equally pleasant surprise, rich with warm roasty character. The initial sip had a hint of the sweetness I had jadedly expected, but it may have been subconscious, because by the second quaff, this settled into an actually quite-nice chocolatey brew. Well done. (#3632, 8/7/2009)
