Commercial Description:
Three Philosophers is a remarkable limited edition strong ale brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

bottle from Kj’s liquor. poured brownish with ruby highlights and an off white head. aroma was very nice with lots of spices and belgian stuff going on with a light aroma of cherry hiding in the background. flavor was same as the aroma plus some dark fruits, grape, and some alcohol. body was medium-heavy with high carbonation. i enjoyed this one.

This is a Belgian Quadrupel mixed with Kriek. The color is amazing and it is a truly great representation of a Belgian Quadrupel. As a lover of Kriek I would love if the cherry flavor was a bit more than a faint hint, but an overall fantastic beer.

heavy yet undistinguished...more like a high-alcohol english ale than the complex belgian brew it aspires to be

Bottle at home. Wow, a great Quad! Aroma is a blend of malts and fruits. Caramel and raisins sit behind a big cherry aroma. Appearance is a hazy amber that pours a frothy off-white head. Head retention is good with nice lacing. Island of foam stick around throughout the experience. Taste and palate is as expected, sweet from start to finish. Great flavors of cherries, caramel, and a touch of vanilla swirl around without ever becoming cloying. Nice average carbination delivers the creamy, medium bodied beer smoothly down the throat. Finish is a long release from the sweet fruits that dominate the palate. I havn’t had a Quad yet that I’ve been disapointed with, and this carries on the tradition!

This beer pours a deep dark ruby/amber with a large off white head . The aromas are cherries, candied sugar and figs. The flavor is sweet on the front leading to a slight dryness in the middle followed by a wollop of sweetness at the end (full of lasting cherry flavor). I was quite surprised by this one! I didn’t think I’d like it much but I do! Cheers!

From a 12oz bottle into a snifter. Pours a medium brown with an inch of thick, foamy head which dissappears, leaving no lacing. Smell is of tart cherries and brown sugar. Mouthfeel is medium-thick but not syrupy, which is good considering the style. Unfortunately, its way too overcarbonated and fizzes with every sip. Taste is of tart cherries up front with sugar, brown sugar, banana and alcohol bringing up the rear. Overall a very good beer but the carbonation kills the mouthfeel. It also doesn’t have enough of that "Belgian" taste considering it’s a Quad.

Cloudy amber with a fluffy white head that settles quickly to reveal scant lacing. Aroma of dark fruits and light spice. Full bodied. Malty flavor with prunes and raisins. Nice.

Big, bold brew right here. Taste is very malt-driven, a syrupy sweetness, and some fruits as well. Pretty thick beer in your mouth, and alcohol certainly doesn’t overpower the taste of the malts and the cherry - mild bite at the end of it. Very interesting beer, something to really examine and enjoy.
