Commercial Description:
Bottle Conditioned. Occasionally available in the cask.
Production moved from Youngs to Wells & Youngs in 2007.
Ingredients: Maris Otter and Crystal malt; Fuggle and Goldings hops. Dry hopped with Golding and Target hops. Re-pitched with fresh yeast and wort in the bottle.
Young’s Special London Ale is the UK’s No.1 bottle conditioned ale. It is an unpasteurised, living beer, matured in the bottle for a fuller, more complex, multi-dimensional, fresher taste. Without artificial carbonation, the only fizz is the natural effervescence created by fermentation.
“A wonderfully balanced, deep-golden strong bottled ale, brewed from pure malt and a phenomenal amount of hops. A lively, fruity character with suggestions of banana and orange zest.”
CAMRA Champion Bottled Beer of Britain - 1999.

A dark amber beer with a white creamy head mostly lasting. Aroma is malty, hoppy (friuty and spicy). Full body. Flavour is mainly sweet carmel malt with notes of fruit and mild spice. Dry and fruity bitter in the lingering finish. It is a very tasty beer.

From a 500ml bottle on 24/1/2010. The nose is spicy hops and toasty malts, which gives more than a hint of vast array of flavours to follow - fruit, spice, caramel and toffee to name but a few. It has a little bit of a Belgian ale character to it, though with a very distinct personality of its own. An extremely complex, and most impressive ale.

13th December 2008. Hazy gold brown beer. Creamy malt with a nice crisp hop profile that provides some dark orange but no bitterness. This blends well with malt providing some additional orange cream flavour. Dry finish. A pleasant surprise!

Bottle. Pours a deep golden orange with slight haze. Small creamy white head that disappears pretty quickly leaving lots of lacings. Aromas of malt, fruity hops, caramel and a little marmalade and light stone fruits. Tastes of biscuity malt with more of the marmalade and tropical fruits. Pine / resiny hops tastes are not overpowering but certainly present. Not overly bitter finish. Mouth feel is very creamy. Certainly an easy drinking beer.

500 ml bottle. From m/s Silja Serenade.
Deep golden colour with tiny white head. Bitter fruity aroma with caramel. Lots of toffee/caramel in bitter fruity flavour. Some sugary sweetness.

Bottle. Copper, small beige head, low bead. Grapefruit, earth, leaves on the nose. Oily texture. Not very vibrant orchard fruits. Hop bitterness is not at all biting, but is persistent. As is often the case for me with these sorts of beers, this mainly reminds me of how much better its lighter cousins are near home poured from the cask. But it’s pretty good.
