COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Once a year Moonlight Meadery releases one of it’s prized barrel aged meads, Utopian, the release for 2014 known as batch #7, has spent 3 years aging in a hand selected Utopias® barrel from Boston Beer Co. This highly sought after mead sells out each year, with only 24 cases being released in 2014. The mead picks up lots of unique notes from the barrels, and becomes softer and more refined with the additional aging. The flavor, reminiscent of a fine cognac, makes for a great after dinner treat. The semi-sweet honey notes, play off the oak making this a one of a kind mead, savor slowly as the 18% ABV is well hidden.

Bottle. Thanks, J! Pours a crystal clear medium gold with minimal head or lace. Sweet nose, showing floral notes, coconut, nougat, caramel, vanilla--lots of different candy bar and honey notes. Sticky thick heavy still body. Nougat, vanilla, coconut, floral notes on the mid palate. Soft, approachable, delicious.

Pours clear pale golden. Aroma is sweetish honey barrel boozy some odd malty like notes. Flavor is as aroma, semi dry fruity vinous finish.

Bottle. Pour is pale gold with slight brown tinting. Aroma and flavor of harsh bourbon, slight spice, and slight sugar. The barrel aging completely overpowers the mead, and not in a good way.

UPDATED: SEP 21, 2014 Alcohol and honey smell. Alcohol taste was a bit too heavy but there was some great sweet honey taste in there too with a mild pecan note that was pleasant.

375 ml clear glass bottle. Pours a clear gold with no head. This is a still mead. Very pleasant aroma of sweet honey with oak and some Utopias vapors. The flavor is sweet honey with oak, vanilla, and some brandy-like Utopias. Not at all rough on the palate despite its abv, although there is a some booziness to this mead. Very enjoyable!

Pours a light gold color. Aroma is brandy, sherry, vanilla and a whisp of coconut. Taste is sweet with taste of honey, brandy and alcohol. I was expecting this to take on a bit more of the Utopias characteristics and darker color. Still a good mead, but not really worth the $40 price tag.

pours a golden color and has some carbonation. smell is of citrusy honey and barrel notes that clearly of utopias. taste is a delicate citrus honey with minimal bees wax and clear utopias barrel notes. mouthfeel has a slight carbonation perhaps opening up the barrel notes. overall very enjoyable and lovely

Bottle shared by Shane. Pours a clear gold with a thin white head that dissipates quickly. Aroma has sweet honey and green apple with a nice alcohol backing. Flavor starts with a good amount of dry honey with a backing note of utopia and oak.

Pours a light golden color. Aromas of honey and oak. Light maple in the flavor with very subtle notes of oak. The honey sweetness is there beneath it all. I was expecting a bit more since it was in Utopias barrels but it was pretty good nonetheless.

Start with malt beer flavors and then an odd honey flavor hits. I’m new to meads and would probably have to retry this one
