Commercial Description:
The brew of choice for mountain bikers, and adventurous types worldwide. (Are you excited now!) This fiery red ale is not for the weak at heart. It originally started out as a Scottish red ale but has taken on flavors of its own. This is a very complex recipe using five different grains to achieve it's unique flavor. The caramel malt used is a mixture of Belgian Caravienne and Hugh Bairds Crystal malts. Red Rocket is a full bodied, hoppy brew which finishes on the pallet with caramel malts. Centennial and Cascade hops are used for bittering and aroma.2004 L.A. Bottle poured into a trappist glass produced a dark amber body with tall, light tan head. Aroma is burnt toast and alcohol. I could smell the hops as this was poured. Nice sweet malts with tons of pine and citrus hop notes which ends dry with lots of nice bitterness on the tongue.

There’s a Scottish ale influence to the malt character. The finish is hoppy and pleasantly bitter. A first class beer.

12oz. bottle served in a shaker pint. Poured a hazy reddish brown with a finger of off white head. Big citrus hop aroma with some malt sweetness. Solid medium body. Good malt base with a nice hop presence. Some bready and caramely malt. Very drinkable. I usually stay away from amber ales, but this is a top notch example.

2007: Excellent deep brownish red color, with a colossal pillowy head; cloud-like. Hard for light to shine through, but is probably relatively clear. Major icy lace. Quite enticing. Appears to have a nice balance of strong hops and strong malt. The malt smells sharp and red, and serves as a bitter match to the hops. Very nice flavor with a great balance of dueling bitters; both hops and sharp malt. Complex malt with a nutty, roasted second wave. Deep and rich flavor. Two hits o’bitter. (Reminds me if Cascazilla, for comparison.) Thick and fully body. Feels almost like a porter, believe it or not. Fits the deep flavor. A slight bit bubbly. A very fin, solid beer. Quite bitter; very bitter. And good. And STRONG!

12 oz. bottle from Sam’s (Binny’s), Downers Grove, Apr. ’09. This should’ve been opened some time before now, I guess. Still, it pours into my glass a dark brown with red highlighting, and a short clingy head the color of a cola head. Smell is rich caramel malts, with graininess in the background, probably from aging. Taste is dry to start, still with resiny hops, and more caramel malt. Nice, happy alcohol notes. I kind of like the grainy taste, as it sets off the bitterness nicely. Pretty good lacing on the sides of the glass.
