Commercial Description:
English-style Old Ale. Hibernation Ale is Colorado’s original strong ale -- it has been Great Divide’s winter seasonal each year since 1995. Hibernation’s massive flavors are so intense that it requires over three months of aging each year. This lengthy aging process gives Hibernation its revered malty richness, complex hop profile and hearty warming character, which is perfect right out of the bottle or cellared for longer periods of time.

slightly hazy reddish-brown colour with a little foam; aroma of overmatured red fruits, very malty with light notes of alcohol, some caramel and chocolate appear too; a good malt body, some sweetness and a low bitterness; the finish is long and fruity with strong notes of anise

This has a really nice redish color, malty aroma. I was surpised to learn of the high alcohol content - no alcohol aroma or taste. It has a slight caramel taste. I could certainly drink a bunch of this and hibernate!

Dark reddish brown, tannish head, medium sweet aroma, flavor is intensely malty, notes of ripe fruit, some chocolate, and spice. Smoky as well. Interesting, complex flavor.

Bottle@Home, Dec 07, 3.8: Fruity, floral and light perfumy aroma. Brown color, yellowish head, good lace. Sweet, raisin, light nutty, bitter, grass, herbs. Full and sticky with a dry finish. Very flavorful. Bottled, Mar 07, 3.0: Aroma of dades, raisin and floral hops. Light hazy, copper/brown colored, beige head, fair lace. Sweet, bitter, hops, thin. Something is really missing. It’s plain and boring but not bad.

Big fat head, slowly diminishing. Heavy aroma, malty and sweet and a robust bitterness. A bit too strong in alcohol, but just a it. Definetly soething I could bring for an hibernation exercise.

Mahogany color; thin creamy head. Malt aroma, some hop resins, candies, light coffee, chocolate. Good body structure (maybe the carbonation is a bit too much aggressive on the tongue), good malt (but a bit thin and metallic at the end), not thick; caramel, quite big bitterness. Good and balanced, but with some off-flavors.

2005 Bottle. Very sugary, sweet aroma with lots of brown sugar, maple, and caramel aromas. There is also some floral hoppiness which is pretty mild. I am also detecting a bit of tabacco as well. Very pleasant and complex aroma. It’s a transparent garnet/amber color with a small off-white head. Lots of chewy caramelly malts, which then turn more sweet with lots of the brown sugar flavor coming out. There is some tobacco at the end and more of the mildly floral hop bitterness. Tobaco follows this once again. I get some lingering woodsiness and oakiness. This is the quintessential "cigar beer".

Wish this was available in Fl. Nice head and has that malt flavor of an English Strong. Yes, there is some hop but this brew is about malt.
