Jacob Spears, our 6th Great Grand Uncle, is credited as the first distiller to label his whiskey "Bourbon." He built his distillery in Bourbon County, Kentucky in 1790 - 203 years before began brewing. While obviously a bit too late to produce Uncle Jacobís wash, weíve instead created something far more complex. In his honor, we present this robust, silky smooth, full-bodied and altogether extremely American rendition of an Imperial Stout aged for 6 months in the very finest bourbon barrels. This explains a lot about our penchant for big brews! Itís in our blood!
Brewed with Rocky Mountain Water, Malter Barley, Flaked Oats, Hops and Yeast.

Bottle [from Secret Santa 2014, thanks to beerandblues2] @ home. Opaque pitch black color, medium sized brown head that diminishes quickly. Aroma is malts, dark malts, lovely soft bourbon and some dark fruits. Taste is intense: moderate to heavy malty, huge bourbon, slightly vanilla, lightly alcohol, dark malts, initially slightly sweet, but a quite bitter finish. Medium to full body, oily texture, medium carbonation. Great beer!

2014 vintage. 12 oz bottle courtesy of Chris, served in a stem glass alongside the base. Pours black with a moderate light brown head that fades to a thin remnant and leaves trace lace. The nose has huge vanilla, oak and bourbon notes, along with chocolate, caramel, raisins, roasted malts and a touch of espresso. The flavour is intensely sweet with huge vanilla, molasses, chocolate, bourbon and oak, along with soy, roasted malts, espresso, earth and subtle hops. The finish is long and oaky, with vanilla, roast malts and chocolate. On the palate it is full in body with a smooth, oily texture and soft carbonation. Overall, a truly amazing bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout. Even tasted next to the base, it is shocking how much more complex this one is. Sweeter, richer, with absolutely ginormous vanilla, chocolate, oak and bourbon. One of the very best imperial stouts on the market. 2015-01-02

Bottle from Jun 27, 2013. Pours thick inky brown, motor oil in the glass with a thin tan head, very fine lacing, decent retention. Aromas of bourbon, chocolate, toffee, oak, and dark fruit. Full body, thick and creamy. Medium sweet, alcohol heat, lasting medium bitter finish with a lingering molasses flavor. Thought it starts fairly close to cloyingly sweet, this ends up being nicely balanced by the heat and bitterness.

Bottle from trade. In snifter. Aroma was too much bourbon and alcohol. Appearance and palate were 5ís. Darrk pour with nice tan lacing. Taste was better than aroma and complex roast dark fruits wood come through too hot and too much alcohol for me. Rate # 996. Think I prefer oak aged stouts vs bbl stouts. Too much of a good thing here

First off, this was a huge bonus sent my way by JohnGalt1, straight off my want list. Super stoked to get to try this, many thanks. Bottle, 2012 release: Pours a very dark brown, near black and is topped with a thick finger of brown head that quickly dies back. As soon as I popped the cap, the aroma permeates the room. It is hugely sweet, dark fruits and molasses, with a healthy amount of influence from the bourbon barrels. Taste is sweeter than expected, but consistent with the nose. Molasses, dark fruits, and bourbon barrel. Some chocolate. I can sense the high ABV, but itís well hidden. Silky smooth and a great finishÖ warms the lips. The only detriment is the all-encompassing sweetness, at least for my taste.

[6284-20140420] Bottle. Meaty charred wet bread aroma. Black body with a medium-lasting brown head. Sugary sweet roasted flavour has a long rich soya sauce aftertaste. Full body. Very tasty but super roasted. (8/4/8/4/16) 4.0

A monstrous beer. Incredibly smooth and drinkable considering the alcohol. Lots of bourbon but also chocolate, coconut and char.
