Commercial Description:
The laws protecting the brewing of kolsch are as strict as the German Purity Law of 1516. Kolsch beer can only be brewed within the city of Cologne. As the best-known kolsch brewery, Gaffel’s flavor is derived from an ale yeast that is "lagered" (or aged) in cold cellars. Gaffel is pale, faintly fruity with a crisp, hop finish. Enjoy as an aperitif or digestif.

This is refreshingly different. Slightly spicy hoppiness, with a mild malt background. Pretty clean on the palate, but has aboslutely no finish.

Vom fass @ Gaffel Kölsch Brauereiausschank, Köln, Germany.
Stumbled across this place by accident as my wife and I did with most Kölsch bier-halls in Köln. Don’t know whether this is brewed here as Gaffel billboards seemed everywhere on the the outer brim of the city and not here in the Altstadt. Anyway, this one served up a palest, dull gold with very fine intermittent carbonation. Head, a pillowy puff of white, held on for dear life and frothed down the Stange. The Kobe’s weren’t wearing the traditional blue apron here, just an observation! Aroma of tight sour fruit, a little salt, some hop leaves shining in from underneath. Its spritzy in the mouth, wine-like (as Stew41 pointed out) in texture and flavour with more sourish, tight fruit, a good whack of gritty, pale malts, some leafy herbs and just a smidgen of bitterness on the peak of the swallow. It is peppery, spicy also, both in the dry swallow and on the palate. Body is extremely light, it’s balanced well and goes down with alarming ease. Very subtle in all aspects but atleast the flavours are well-defined. Quite nice, getting lost in the Altstadt isn’t at all a bad thing.

Pours a clear yellow with a soapy white head. Poor lacing and aroma-some yeast. Crisp and mildly hoppy as described. Overly carbonated. Not worth the price.

Rather pale coming out of the bottle, rocky white head. Aroma is grainy with a bit of hoppiness. Palate is grassy with a touch of the German hops, and buttery. Very much like our pale lager style.

Looks for all the world like a macro – clear gold amber and zero depth to the head. Nose is hard to place, the best I can do is some hard mineral-like notes that one may see in a steely dry Riesling. Not unpleasant. More minerals on the palate and the flavour weight fills out nicely with a liqueured note and some controlled malt sweetness. Again the resemblance to Riesling is more than passing.

bottle, pours light gold, thin white head. Aroma is sour with some light hay and hop notes. Taste is very light with more of a hop presence in the finish than I expected. Nothing to write home about, but it has more character than others.

Pours clear light golden color with big white head. Aroma is lightly hoppy and grassy. Flavor is slighyl sweet and fruity with a metallic after taste. Not much complexity, kind of boring. Light body, very thin mouthfeel and fizzy carbonation.
