COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Once upon a time it was the most award winning Pizza Port beer of all time. Now it has found a new home at The Lost Abbey. A massive brown ale base that is made from four fermentable sugars including Malted Barley, Raisins, Candi Sugar and Sour Cherries, this beer is fully fermented before being placed in Bourbon barrels where the beer ages for one year with the Sour Cherries and the wild Brettanomyces yeast that we inoculate the barrels with. One of the most complex and unique beers we make each year.

This is seriously on of the most unique teasing beers I've ever had. It starts with a sour flavor develops a smokey oak flavor and finishes strongly of raisins.

Bottle at Xmas, pours deep cherry red, small head and light carbonation. Cherries in the noise, with cocoa, oak, grape, sour, sour, sour, acidy tannins tingle on the tongue imparting a long full, heavy sour cherry aftertaste. Really well done with great balance.

Bottle thanks to..... eek I’m really sorry, someone gave this to me at a Pigs Ear beer festival when it was still at the nightclub. And for that so much thanks. TBone? Ken? Sorry. Pours deep deep ruby almost black with ruby edges. Lasting tan head. Excellent exciting spine tingling sour cherry aroma, with some malt backbone. Like black cherry, some chocolate. Smells like a dark chocolate cherry liquer. The sour aroma is hypnotic. It’s freakin’ excellent. OK so I’d want a bit more farmyard from an authentic Belgian sour, but that is being picky. Smooth dark chocolate and this burst of sour dark cherry. It’s really quite sour. Perfectly balanced though and quite dry on the finish, with a touch of fruity vinegar on the finish. A little bit of tannin. I mean it is superb. Complex flavours. Lacks perhaps the authentic Belgian funk but still, it’s pretty damn good. Smooth, sour. Some vinegar flavours that build. An accomplished sour. It’s rather hypnotising. I’ll have to have a Struise Earthmonk afterwards to compare. I liked it though.

Bottle at Appellation Comely Bank tasting thanks to BenH. Appearance - muddy brown like starting into a puddle. Also no head whatsoever. Nose - incredible, so much going on. Sour, but salty almost like anchovies, then there’s wood spice complementing the salt with pepper. A sweet tang from fruit going on too. Taste - as per the nose, it drags you in and shows you more and more. Palate - the body is medium in structure, the texture seems delicate to begin with but then it shows great power and persistence. The finish is a continuation of this and it tapers perfectly to the end. A beer of incredible elegance and restrained power. Overall - A beer of true individual personality and now my new favourite beer! Wow, thanks Ben, one I’ll never forget.

Bottle at tasting. Shame we left this so late in to the night! Pours murky brown, no real head. Lovely aromas, leather, sour fruit, oak, spice, raisins, pepper. Lots going on. Taste is cherries, oak, bourbon, and everything else! Very sour finish. Different to everything on that night, and in a class of its own.

Bottle. Bit of an ugly brown with no head. Aroma is leathery and funky, raisin, prune, oak, spicy, peppery. Taste is intense, prune, hint of chocolate, super funky, spicy. Extremely sour

Bottle: 2006 vintage, around 8 years old. Reminds me I need to crack my fresh bottle soon. Huge thanks to Mike for this old beast. Muddy, red-brown swamp water. No head at all... Surprised? Looks like shit, to be honest. But the aroma is nice! Sour cherry, vinous red grape, booze-laden & drenched oak, earthy lemon, & hints of vanilla. Very mild on acetic & lactic notes. Taste is boozier than expected with a very slight bourbon tone that transitions more into a boozy wine-like feeling once the rest of the flavors kick in. Acidic cherry skin, red wine grapes, lemon. Oxidation is present, but gives off more of a boozy-sherry vibe at this point, thankfully. Lots of cherry & lots of wet oak in the finish. Leans towards darker fruits (prune, date, raisin) but the acidity & tartness keep things bright. Smooth, oily mouth feel; some carbonation would help a bit.

375cl bottle served in a Prearis glass (which incidentally is identical to a Lost Abbey glass). Pours a dark mahogany colour with zero carbonation and only with the final drips does a head form (for all of two seconds). Aroma is the most powerful rendition of the style I have experienced. Taste once up to temperature is complex treat of cherries, red wine, oak, and bourbon. Hides its ABV like no other beer and the mouthfeel is luxuriously apt. Very good but rather pricey compared to say a Liefmans Goudenband.

W konsystencji przypomina czerwone wino. W smaku przyprawowe o smaku tarty i suszonych owoców, przypraw i mnóstwo drewna.
