Commercial Description:
For the Christmas and New Year festivities the Gouden Carolus range is now extended to include this seriously heavy strong brown ale. Het Anker are thus rekindling a long lost tradition from the days of yore when they marketed Cardinal Christmas and Anker Christmas.

A Mes rate: 33cl bottle from Kris Wines.
Awesome jet black appearance with a good tan head then can be added to whenever you wish by a quick swill. Wonderful nose of heavy liquorice, malt, vanilla and spice. Stunning creamy alcohol type notes. Flavour more of the same but just slightly let down by the huge huge alcohol. Plenty of burn that is just about tollerable but in a so wrong it’s good way. Full bodied and sweet and fruity and all round excellent. Aged bottles are fantastic.

Bottle. Pours dark brown, with a shiny tan head. Sweet slightly phenolic nose. Cherries, berries and lots of marzipan in the aroma. Also some chocolate. Rather sweet like most Anker brews. Palate is smooth and silky, alcohol well hidden. Very good.

Tap. Dark ruby brown pour. Off white head. Faint sweet nose. Taste is cherries, oranges, caramel, and yeast. Very nice.

A clear dark brown colored beer, with a thick foamy beige head. The aroma of sweet caramal malts with fruits and several spices. The taste of carmel, and spices with a fine combination sweet, some bitter and spices. The aftertaste is mostly sweet.

Bottle. Best before 06/09/06. Dark amber red with a beige head fastly disapearing. Intense malty nose, it has the coca cola nose that all dark carolus carries in my opinion, with candied oranges, figs, dates. Full body, super malty with a long malty and sweet finish. This beer must have had better days but I’m impressed considering it was botlled in 2003 or 2004. No sign of overly oxydized beer here, just a bit one-dimensionnal, but it’s probably the age that did it. Nice winter warmer.

330ml Bottle from Corks, Bristol. Opaque, ruddy brown in colour with plenty of carbonation and a thick off-white head. Aroma of candy sugar, cinnamon and berry fruit. Sweet flavour, with more cherry fruit, liquorice and marzipan, before a dryish finish. Good.

een donkere boby met een voor mij niet zo lekkere drop smaak. en verder nog een kruidige smaak met een redelijk nutrale afdrong maar ook hier zit een lichte drop smaak.

I shared this with MereLikesBeer, and this stuff was incredible. I’m not usually a huge Belgian fan, I really enjoyed this beer. The aroma, mouthfeel, flavor, all were one hundred percent spot on. Honestly, THE perfect winter time ale, which would pare perfectly with an evening by the fire, or any other winter time activity. Cheers!
