Pours birch-beer crimson brown with modest tan head that fades to trace. Aromas deep and vinous, sherry, coffee ice cream aromas, nutmeg, rum-soaked raisins. Potent alcohol is perfectly masked within the aromas, but integrated wonderfully. Do you have any tobacco? This beer has. Chewy plug tobacco presents itself on the palate along with a nice nutty malt balance. As sweet as it is, the sugary aspect is countered by a rich smokey character. Big liquor (cognac, sherry) flavors but never overbearing. The balance of this brew is outstanding. Wow! skaughty (621), Marietta, Georgia, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 29, 2004 Who stole the Aventinus and relabeled it? No wait - this is better! Since this is the original recipe, maybe the boys at Schneider need to pay some royalties. This brew is sweet - literally. The aroma is strong in tobacco and and largely reminiscent of a scotch ale with some toffee. The taste is of a roasted heath bar. The malt is so dense and the mouthfeel so excellent. I can see how this was used medicinally. You MUST drink this at room temperature. Kevin (1926), Colorado, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Sep 13, 2006 i wasn’t looking to buy more beer, but i was at the store, and the voice that controls my wallet said, "Hey, Asshole!!! You can never try enough eisbocks, buy this or i will sing Phil Collins songs in our head all fucking day." so i bought it.
it pours a dark brown with hints of red when held to the light and a pastey white head that does not last long, but formed a little foam island that looked to bubble in duvel tulip like a volcano was trying to erupt.
aroma, well, syrupy cherry, blackberry, alcohol, marshmallow cream.
flavor is nice and chewy with dark fruits and sugared goodness. taste of banana laffy taffy is here, with caramel apples, some light roast and wood notes arise in the finish. some strawberry, and plum flavors are here too. finish reminds me of a wurthers candy. the alcohol is really light on the palate considering the abv. a damn good beer, and much preferrable to phil collins. Aromas of caramel, chocolate, a touch of yeast and some dark fruit. Flavor is big of toffee, caramel, chocolate, some dark fruits... Quite malty and delicious. Very buttery and smooth palate. Coats the mouth like a caramel candy. Alcohol is covered completely.. Low carbonation and full body.. I found this very enjoyable and quite delicious.. Delirium (507), Santa Cruz, California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Sep 17, 2006 Bottle. Pours dark brown with ruby tinges, with very little carbonation and a moderate off-white head that lingers. Aroma is very sweet and fruity (cherry, dark cherry, berries, plums), plus some toffee and nuttiness, and slightly noticeable alcohol. Flavor is sweet but also somewhat vinous fruit, in a complex combination of all sorts of flavors---same fruits as in the aroma, plus some strawberry and blackberry. A bit of hops, hint of alcohol, and woodiness spice up the generally smooth finish. Smooth mouthfeel with a bit of warming (but little bite or taste) from the alcohol, and a pleasant lingering aftertaste. I like this quite a lot, although it’s my first eisbock, so I can’t really compare it. beerinmarch (2830), Washington, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Jul 31, 2004 Pours a dark red, almost black with a small white head that leaves moderate lacing on the glass. Strong sweet aroma, very malty, with hints of chocolate, slightly roasty coffee, and a bit of alcohol near the end. Taste starts very smooth and sweet, great maltiness, caramel like, with a good balance. Very smooth brew, and at this amount of alcohol, its hidden very well. boto (1368), Granby, Connecticut, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Apr 7, 2003 Brown color with a small head that dissipates quickly. Heavy sweet malts and some fruitiness in the nose. Very smooth, almost "thick", creamy taste. Caramel tastes also. Similar to some of the trappistes. A very good find! Wonderful malt palate - demerara again, chewy earth, wood. Long, wonderful malt finish. Hint of alcohol. Damn Eggenberg rocks.
