A strong, complex dark beer in the 18th century style that was brewed for export to the Russian court. It has plenty of malt character with low levels of carbonation and huge roasted chocolate and burnt malt flavours. Best served with a little warmth. As it can be both sweet and bitter and always full bodied we suggest choosing a similar route with your food. For cheeses go with a robust farmhouse, crumbly blue or strong goats cheese. For mains go with red meat or game, a well marbled rib eye or even a full fat burger compliment this stout really well. You have lots of options for dessert from chocolate brownies to tiramisu and coffee cake or espresso ice cream. Even apple or pecan pie and cheesecake go majestically with this bottled beer.

UPDATED: MAY 1, 2016 Mørk med medium høyde på det lysebrune skummet. Aroma av mild lakris, bål og melkesjokolade. I smaken er det røyk og melkesjokolade. Noe kaffe også. Medium konsistens.

Bottle from Bradleys. Really dark with a thick tan head. Aroma of burnt malts and coffee. Flavour has a dry bonfire smokiness with coffee and caramel malts. Wonderful stout.

Bottle @ RBWG 2016. Thanks, Colin (I think). Holy smokes. The head on this beer is enormous and fills almost the whole glass. Looks like there might be some beer underneath... Smokey, roasty, and a bit ashy. Maybe some metallic qualities as well. Flavor is fairly bitter and the smoke and roast really dominate. Some molasses, licorice, and chewing tobacco. Wasn’t a big fan of this. The overcarbonation is not helping either.

750 ml bottle to taster. Not sure how this is a RIS at 7%, but phuck it. Looks solid; a translucent dark cola with ample fizzy beige head that slowly but steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells of dark malt, dark chocolate, and toast. Tastes like it smells both some odd bitterness alongside a bit of anise. Mouthfeel is medium to medium full-bodied. Underwhelming.

At a tasting, thanks, medium frothy bubbly head, clear deepish brown color with some reddish hues, roasted coffee aroma, milk and dark chocolate flavor with some charred notes, mellow bitterness. Fair but not really too exciting.
