SilkTork (7741) - Southampton, Hampshire, ENGLAND - DEC 4, 2023
UPDATED: DEC 4, 2023 Day 4 of the Beavertown advent calendar 2023. Small can, filtered. 7.4%. In the BrewDog v Beavertown advent calendars head to head, BrewDog are leading, but I suspect that this dark 7.5% beer may win today, equally the contest. However, I have rated this beer before, so that loses points. There is also the potential for losing points because I don't really like citric hops on a dark malty beer. However, the hops here are moderate, and not as intrusive as they can be on beers that brewers term 'Black IPA'. Having said that, the mouthfeel, depth, and general oomph is also rather weaker than expected from a beer that is 7.4%. Swings and roundabouts. On the whole this doesn't quite live up to its promise. It plays it remarkably safe. But that's Beavertown for yer. Or, Heineken anyway. Yes. Easy drinking and quite commercial, especially for a Black IPA. Hmmm. This could be close. I wonder what the Day 4 BrewDog beer is going to be? [2.7] March 2018. 330ml can, unfiltered, from an online shop. Drunk straight from the fridge as it expected with craft beer. This is OK. A decent level of roasted malts produce a smooth, tasty, and satisfying beer. Nice mouthfeel - though there is some residual carbonation in here which is uncomfortable in the stomach. I didn't find the hops obtrusive. Overall this has been a pleasant and tasty beer. [3.0]

DraftDodger (7604) - Copenhagen, DENMARK - MAY 21, 2022
UPDATED: MAY 21, 2022 Copenhagen 21/5 2022. 33 cl can from Meny, Vermlandsgade, Kbh. S. Black and purple can with two skeletons a skeletal date. Pours opaque, dark brown with a big off-white head. Stable Settles as 0,3 cm thick, creamy layer of foam just covering the surface of the beer. Clinging to the side of the glass. Substantial lacing. Aroma is medium intense with sweet, dark and roasted odor mingling with citric fumes. Dar roasted malts with hints of sweet toffee. Citrus and lemon. Light carbonation. Medium thick, oily, soft, smooth, a bit creamy texture. Lightly tingling. Flavor is fairly intense with medium strong sweetness followed and balanced by a medium strong bitterness. Aftertaste is bitter with a notable sweet undertone. Lingers for a while. Finish is semi-dry. Satisfying Black IPA hitting most of the right buttons.

snowcrash000 (2268) - Cologne, GERMANY - FEB 2, 2021
UPDATED: FEB 2, 2021 Pours a very dark mahogany coloration, with an amber sheen when held up to the light, and a large, creamy head. Smells of roasted malt and citrus hops, with notes of grapefruit and lime peel, as well as just a hint of pine. Taste is an excellent balance of roasted malt, lighter chocolate and bitter, fruity, slightly resinous hops, with strong, zesty citrus notes of grapefruit and lime peel, as well as some pine also coming through. Finishes with a medium/strong bitterness and some roasted malt, citrus and pine lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth, soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation. Well, what can I say, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. While I have been boycoting Beavertown ever since they sold out to Heineken, I couldn't help but grab this can of Black Betty, as great Black IPAs are just so fucking hard to come by and I dearly love them. Also, for some reason I failed to review this back when I had it for the first time before they sold out. You know what, I remembered it better, but not sure if that is due to freshness, nostalgia or my aversion to Heineken. The focus seems to have shifted from the roasted malt to the zesty citrus hops a little, but overall this still makes for a very enjoyable example of the style.

FACambridge (1438) - Chelmsford, Essex, ENGLAND - FEB 13, 2020
UPDATED: FEB 15, 2020 Aroma : Roasted dark chocolate malt, touch of coffee and some pine/citrus hop note. Taste : Roasty maltiness with chocolate sweetness and a touch of bitter coffee, light citrus bite adds a little dryness. Although only a thin-medium body the great balance and depth make it feel much weighter. Very good!
