4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pitch black and opaque with a 1.5 finger dark beige head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Great retention for the style and high ABV with streaks of soapy lacing left behing.
Aroma is outrageous with tons of gourmet coffe roast holding up underneath the strong barrel presence. Dry toasted oak with amazing spicy bourbon character, coconut and vanilla bean. Still plenty of robust coffee, dark chocolate and oatmeal followed by dessert-like sweet malts, chocolate cake, baker’s chocolate and fudge. Perfect barrel integration with lots of coffee still coming through.
Full bodied and viscous with a strong, spicy bourbon barrel presence that’s countered by robust, deeply roasted coffee flavor and dark and silky sweet malt notes. Barrel character is strong up front with dry oak complimeted by spicy sweet bourbon, vanilla bean and toasted coconut. Decent alcohol flavor but not hot or boozy at all. The coffee realy comes through with robust roast and gourmet espresso followed by burnt malt and sugars, oatmeal and dark chocolate. Slightly grainy with flour less chocolate cake, baker’s chocolate, toffee and caramel sweetness. Very smooth and well balanced with a delicate, nicely integrated barrel character and excellent Kopi coffee flavor. Incredibly complex and surprisingly easy to drink considering the high ABV with lots of oak, bourbon, robust coffee, burnt malt and silky chocolate sweetness. Excellent!

Speedway is one of the marvels of the stout world. It's darkness threatens a more bitter, breakfast stout-like taste, but it delivers a smooth, full-bodies taste with just the right amounts of everything, especially the coffee. At the end of the palette lies just a hint of vanilla, it's signature. There's only one Speedway Stout and it's always a good choice.

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
750' mL bottle shared with ebone1988 for his 500th rating, because I'm pretty badass. The pour is a viscous oily black with a medium brown ring of head and no lace. The aroma is great. There is a beautiful malt, coffee, chocolate, and barrel. The bourbon really comes through, to a point of being boozy. There is also a resounding vanilla that carries out the back end. A definite green wood is apparent from the barrel. The flavor is really nice. The coffee really comes through, without being overpowering. The chocolate is really heavy, but not dominating. Again there is a distinct green oak input, but the vanilla and roast are great. It's just really well balanced and nice. The mouth feel is thick and creamy, maybe a little chewy, with a soft, velvety carbonation and a lingeringly roasty coffee vanilla finish. It's so smooth and delicious

4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20
#500. Bottle shared with koleminer20, because he’s fucking awesome. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, barrel, coffee, roasted malt. Appearance is black, light brown head, thick. Taste is incredible, bourbon barrel, vanilla, heat, then sweet malt, licorice, and coffee. Mouthfeel is velvet, wonderfully thick, rich, perfect carbonation, wow. Overall, this is a wonderful choice for #500.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at home. Pours pitch black with a soapy dark beige head that disappears quickly. Aroma of green coffee beans a hint of green paprica and subtle vanilla bourbon. Medium body, alcohol burn but nice bitterness towards the end... with a solif sugary film. Taste is dark vanila chocolate, burnt malts, caramel and thick mocca coffee. Nice beer, but a tad overrated in my honest opinion.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Originally reviewed 4/23/2013. 750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Jet black with a nice khaki head. Chunky bubbles. Thick collar. A few wisps on the surface. Smell of lots of bourbon. Intense bourbon. A touch of coffee, but it’s overpowered by the barrel. Chocolate back there too. Really intense bourbon flavor too. Covers the coffee initially. The chocolate from the stout comes through here. The coffee is mostly prevalent in the back end here. Thick and chewy. No heat, but there’s a lot of bourbon to it. Medium carbonation. Excellent beer. Intense bourbon, masks the coffee, but makes up for it in deliciousness.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Inky black with a deep rising Mocha head. Nice cocoa swirl of foam that fades to clinging lace with thick legs. Aromas of wafting bourbon, oak, vanilla, dark fruits, milk chocolate and cold pressed coffee. Velvety, creamy mouthfeel gives espresso notes, latte, cocoa and vanilla that meld into a deep note of dark fruit and bourbon before bitter bakers chocolate, fudge, bitter coffee and an alcohol note solidify the finish. Very smooth warming bourbon notes linger with the Kopi. Very nice.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle shared as part of a full bottled speedway vertical by Ben at his 40th birthday. Thanks for sharing all the killer beers! Drinking all of these side-by-side while becoming increasingly intoxicated drives home a few points. (1) they all pretty much taste the same -- I mean, the bourbon barrel versions are a little smoother with more bourbon/vanilla with the coffee in the background, but with the exception of regular Vietnamese I couldn’t telly you which of the many variants I was drinking without looking closely at the bottle. (2) that’s fine, though, because they’re all pretty tasty.

Shared with the crew @ Brickstore. Always nice when one can drink a top 50 beer, and it certainly was in my top 50. The coffee has faded or mellowed (or maybe that is the affect of it going through an animal’s digestive system). The base beer was complimented extemely well by the barrel with loads of chocolate and bourbon and vanilla with the mellow coffee. Just super nice.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle shared with the crew. Big flavors here, vanilla, bit of wood, light coffee, bittersweet roasty malt. The coffee at this point seems a little faded and is only very faint far back on the palate. Smooth from start to finish. Bit of bourbon sweetness and a light alcohol bite on the back end. A lot going on but all working together really well in typical Alesmith Speedway fashion.
