   AROMA 7/10   APPEARANCE 4/5   TASTE 7/10   PALATE 4/5   OVERALL 14/20
jhumphries69 (1034) - Tyrone, Georgia, USA - AUG 18, 2006
UPDATED: JAN 5, 2008 Color is dark amber with near-white head. Aroma is faint - some malt, some fruit, mostly yeasty. Flavor is a balance of malts, spicey hops, alcohol, and hints of something sour (not objectionably sour - perhaps not the freshest sample). Also slightly roasted, almost savory, flavors. The beer feels cloying between the middle and the finish, but finally finishes somewhat dry. The body is heavily carbonated (even after a vigorous pour to release most of it).

Re-rate 1/4/2008: 50cl bottle. Poured a deep, clear, dark brown with amber/red highlights and a medium-sized tan head. The aroma was bready and very sweet with malts. There were also hints of caramel-covered fruit in the aroma. The flavor followed the aroma: very sweet and malty, very light level of bittering hops, and unexpectedly fruity. The fruit character really made the beer taste almost like a strong, malty, brown ale - but it was not objectionable, just unexpected from a German lager bier. The mouthful is full-bodied and well-carbonated. The carbonation was high enough to feel spritzy on the tip of the tongue, but creamy towards the middle and back of the palate. Overall, a more pleasant experience that I remember from last time (previous rating was a total score of 3.3 - Aroma, Palate, and Overall Impression each received an extra point, resulting in a new total of 3.6).

UPDATED: JAN 21, 2024 Nice malty doppelbock. Had from a 12oz bottle. Pours dark, with minimal foam.

hauxe (4001) - Butzbach, GERMANY - DEC 25, 2023
UPDATED: DEC 26, 2023 Bottle discovered by Peter in the porch fridge in Rio Rancho during the 2022 Christmas party. Brown with a thin, foamy head. Aroma full of caramel. Faintly vinous. Malty sweet with a touch of roasted bitterness. Body to full side of medium, mild carbonation, occasionally watery texture. Felt flattened out and dull, but may have suffered in storage. Didn’t have time to concentrate on this one.

Banksiz (291) - Sacramento, California, USA - OCT 23, 2023
UPDATED: OCT 23, 2023 Malty nose, some raisin notes. Medium body, sweetness. Moderate bitterness that's more hoppy than roasty. Dry finish. Not up to the world-class strong dark ales, but a lot of flavor and interest for a 7.6% beer.

Arbitrage411 (343) - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA - DEC 8, 2021
UPDATED: DEC 8, 2021 Opaque cola color with amber hues when held up to light. Beige 1 finger head, foamy with residual lacing. Chocolate dark malt on the nose and taste. Not at all bitter. Bread like, fruit cake sweet. Good example of a Doppelbock. Subtle alcohol onset. Persistent head over light finish.

damzz (982) - Methuen, Massachusetts, USA - SEP 9, 2021
UPDATED: SEP 28, 2023 Pours a dark brown with an off white head that dissolves to a thin ring leaving spot lacing. Nose is caramel, raisins. Taste is sweet - caramel, raisins, toasted malt with a bitterness that enhances the taste lasts a moment. After taste is dry with a lingering shadow of the taste. 12 oz bottle BBY 3/22 Thanks, Spaten, for exporting 12 oz bottles unlike other German and Euro brewers with 11.2 oz. The USA is NOT metric and we should not be subjected to the machinations of the EU.

UPDATED: NOV 10, 2020 Caramel flavor combined with dark roasted fruits are the main ingredients. Tastes like a typical German dark beer. Decent.
