Commercial Description:
Traditionally, there are a lot of rules when it comes to brewing great beer. The fact that American craft brewers have broken those rules to produce some of the world’s finest beers is downright heroic. At Goose Island we live and die by hops, so breaking the rules meant pushing the hop limit to the extreme to create this monster Imperial IPA. We took three of our favorite hops, TETTNANG, SIMCOE, and CASCADE, and balanced their spiciness with tons of malt. Them we went back and dumped in MORE HOPS and more malt until this beer was exploding with flavor...strong enough to wake the dead and filled with more bitterness than a woman scorned. This Imperial IPA is absolutely gigantic, you’ll smell the hops from about a yard away. What will surprise you is how incredibly drinkable it is. Pair it up with the saltiest blue cheese you can find, and go nuts.

Poured a hazy orange color with a small off white head. Aroma is hopped up and citrusy, not much pine. Flavor is also very citrusy hops but balanced very well with malt, not the hop bomb i expected.

Probably a crazy hop bomb when fresh, had it two years old. Aroma and taste are still nice and hoppy, but the majority has probably faded leaving a huge malt backbone with some bitterness. Good beer, wish I could try it fresh!

Bottle from 2006, so this will be interesting. Pours a very hazy ruby hued brown with a thin white head. Surprisingly there’s still a good bit of hop presence, but definitely faded and turning to mostly malt with some plum and prune notes. Medium bodied, very malty, a little bit boozy. Finishes up with a long lingering bitterness and more plum and prune malt flavors. I’d love to try this fresh.

Bottle. 2006 vintage. "Best when consumed by March 31, 2007". Actually consumed on January 10, 2010. Deep copper-amber with a thin head and fairly still body. Aroma is like malt and pineapple candy - a little stale, perhaps, but in pretty good shape considering the age. Flavour is initially quite sweet, with notes of floral honey and tropical fruit, and finishes with a moderate bitterness that has subtle citrus notes. I suspect that there was a lot of hoppiness going on when this beer was fresh, but even in it’s advanced state, it’s still a big and flavourful brew, just not a monstrously hoppy one.

Pint on tap in NYC. Pours a nice golden amber color with minimal head, very appetizing. Aroma very floral and sweet and a little spicy. Maybe a little fruitiness mixed in there as well. Taste was bitter and sweet with some spices, reflecting the aroma. Smooth palate given the high bitterness- reminds me of more of a pale ale. Crisp, refreshing aftertaste.Well made IPA and far superior to the 312 I had a few months ago.

2006 bottle courtesy of Ughsmash. Pours a hazy caramel color with thin white head. Aroma is slightly hoppy with notes of caramel, honey, yeast, wheat, light floral esters. Flavor is sweet and floral with notes of caramel, light grapefruit, honey, floral hops, light citrus. Medium body with a pleasing floral hop and malt finish. For 3 years old, this beer still had some floral hoppiness to it.

Draft. Pours hazy orange amber with a white head. Weird herbal and sweet flavor. Not that good. This reminds me a lot of the Capt. Lawrence IIPA I had on draft a few months ago that just seemed completely off. I’m thinking maybe it was a bad keg or something with the tap lines or something because I love my IPA’s and this beer was just not good. I look forward to trying this fresh out of a bottle at some point.

Pours a deep orange. This was a 06 bottle so most hops have faded. Still had some nice floral and citrus hop nose along side some sweet caramel hops. Flavor is bitter hops, sweet malts and toffee. Some oxidation. Really want to try this fresh.
