Commercial Description:
A moderately strong Belgian Abbey-style beer. The traditional yeast strain imparts a complex assortment of spicy phenolic and fruity flavors Hints of clove, plum and raisin permeate this rich, malty and full-bodied beer. And its lofty, tan head sits gracefully atop the seductive, deep mahogany nectar.

Color was almost identical to red wine, had almost no head or lacing.. not surprising given the bottling date. Aroma was darker fruits, yeast, caramel, spices. Flavor is the same, easy to drink with a delicately balanced mouthfeel. MMM nice.

Bottled on 1/22/2002, special thanks go out to the Cellar of Gondor for this one! Clear deep garnet pour with a few chunky floaties in there... short yellowy-beige head capped it off. Wonderful deep and complex old ale-ish nose to it... dark, worn fruity malts, toffee, buttery figs, and aged dried apples. Also picked up faint alcohol as it wamred. Very rustic and inviting. Flavor found a bit of port or sherry upfront with mild notes of oxidization... followed by dry figs, earth, toffee... increasing deep fruits and spices as it warmed. Middle of the palate felt a tad empty. Otherwise dry and pleasant. Dry port at the finish. Thanks for the wonderful treat, Joel!

750-ml. bottle, vintage dated 1-22-2002.
Garnet meets ruby translucency as beady bubbles join a tan doily wrung on the edge of the glass. Aroma is, in a word, complex. Coco prunes, port, brandy basking figs, golden raisins in liquefied brown sugar, tannic oak, and some ABV indicatives serenade the nose with a slight touch of mulberry. Nutmeg dances with candied red grape skin shards, bridging the nose to the mouth. Golden and grape raisin catenations. Dry, percussive tannic underlays. Nutmeg and cinnamon over boiled, chunky applesauce. Maple oaken syrup mingles with black cherry pits and deep ruby grapes. Vinous port dimensions. Carbonation is supple and everything is phenomenally well melded. Finish takes on more of the dark fruit semblances, with boiled and pureed dark cherry figs, port, subtle spicing nodes (cinnamon, nutmeg and coriander,) and sweet trailings resounding long after. Such a delicacy and a delight. Thanks for the bottle, CaptainCougar!

01/22/2002 bottle shared by Joel. The beer pours to a ruby body with a fizzy off-white head. The body has lots of chunks in it. The aroma is minty, twigs, cinnamon sticks, stewed apples and figs. Very unique. The flavor is also very unique. Herbal, twiggy, earthy, "spicy" but I use that term vaguely. Sorta indescribable. The palate is very smooth. Earthy. Delicate. Wow! Thanks!

Vintage ’04 bottle... Appears a dark mahogany with a small tan head. Spotty lacing is left around the glass. Smell is of yeasty bread, toasted nuts, warm caramel, mild cocoa, vanilla, black plums, raisins, and perhaps a hint of cherries. Taste is of yeasty bread, along with the aforementioned aromas. Mouthfeel is slightly fizzy and yeasty along the tongue. Sweet & bready brew. Pretty well balanced. Please...bring this style back! Even if it’s only once a year!

Poured a lightly hazy, ruby red color with a small, light tan head that left very light lacing on the glass. Aroma of dark fruits, cherry, light roast, vanilla, yeast and light alcohol. Taste of nuts, vanilla, light roast, toasted dough, dried fruits, caramel malt, some yeast and medium alcohol as well.

Bubblegum, brown/candy sugar and perfumey, floral hops are apparent in the aroma. Opaque deep brown body with a low, off white head that recedes to ring. Thick, round, brown, malt flavour with some bubblegum esters and notes of chocolate and soy. Medium body with fair carbonation. Bottle enjoyed with beerbuzzmontreal, MartinT, Oliver_MTL, Rastacouere and Yowie.

Pours a cloudy brown color with a ring of offwhite lace. Good aroma of caramel, bubble gum and alcohol. The flavor is also interesting and mostly sweet with caramel and bubble gum, alcohol is present but mild. The body is light to medium with a creamy texture and moderate carbonation.
