Against the Grain / De Struise Scorched Monk

RATINGS: 88   WEIGHTED AVG: 3.52/5   EST. CALORIES: 270   ABV: 9%
COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Collaboration beer breweed with Urbain Cotteau of De Struise Browers, Vletern, Belgium. Very similar to a Flanders Oud Bruin, this sour mash beer is rich, slightly smoky and sour. There is a unique woody flavor from the 4 month bourbon barrel conditioning it underwent. The nose is very light caramel and vanilla. The color is ruby brown to amber. It is brewed similarly to Urbain’s own Ypres beer, with a Kentucky Spin on it.

Bottle, many thanks Jan! Hazy dark amber-brown color with beige head. Aroma is fresh barrel, oak, cherries, chalky, chocolate. Taste is the same. A very dry Sour Red with a nice refreshing finish. Clinically clean oaky Sour which hides the ABV ridiculously well....

Aroma is pure oak, probably Buffalo Trace Barrels, Flemiah oud brown flavour and lime cordial and sugar. Taste is Burgundy red wine, Bourbon and sour sweets like Toxic Waste. Interesting and complex. Thanks Urbain. Quite acidity.

from Au Trappiste - translucide ruby-brown beer with a poor head retention; decently woody with notes of marzipan, sour cherries, bourbon and figs; moderate carbonation; full-bodied, sweet and fairly sour; dry and long Bourbon-like finish woth more notes of cherries, dried fruits, vanilla and apples

Pours ruby red amber with a very tiny head. Aroma of balsamic, vinegar, sour grapes, mouldy oak, dirty basement, some smoked malts in the background, leather Taste is tart and smoked. Some sweet bourbon notes, leather notes, sweet balsamic notes, some sour berries and vinegar. Very well hidden alcohol. Strange balance between the sour , the smoked and the sweet bourbon. Sure interesting but not really a masterpiece.

Bottle.. Pour has a nice, dark rubyred amber with an off white, fizzy head. Aroma has some unripe berries, grapes, cherry, some vinegar, dry leather, old basement malts, bourbon, vanilla, and some darker notes.. Maybe some caramel? Taste has a sharp tartness up front, some bitterness, and then comes the smoke, which really doesn’t suit this beer. Ends of really leather-dry. Fizzy body and extremely well hidden alcohol. Still tastes bad.

Bomber. Amber no head after 3 sec fizz. Aroma is little like bitumen, burnt apple. Taste is leather, sour apple, little lemon, smoky wood. Thin palate. Good at hiding it’s booze. Bit of a head scratcher but a grower..

UPDATED: OCT 11, 2014 750ml bottle shared at CC/KY tasting. Vinegar, acidic sourness. Chunky unfiltered orange-brown body. Oliy beige head. Yeasty and rich. A great sour beer, very American for better or worse. Good stuff. 750ml shared at tasting. Deep amber burgundy. Quite a nice Oud Bruin. Oily beige head. Big red vinegar notes. The malts do a good job of combating the huge US sour-like tones. I don’t get much smoke, but maybe it just merges in well. Very nice.
