Commercial Description:
A superb porter, hearty & dark. This one is a staff favorite, made with pale, crystal, Munich, chocolate, and black malts. The darker malts give Coal its color and rich flavor. We use Target and Willamette hops to yield a very subtle hop flavor in this porter. We cellar this beer for close to six months before releasing it on the thirsty throngs of fans.

Dark brown basically black except in the light. Almost nothing forms for a head just some small light tan bubbly carbonation sits in spotty islands on top. Coffee and tobacco nose, sweet and roasted. Body is light with strong bitter roasted malts and coffee. A bittering finish lingers nicely with the roasted malt.

Pours a deep brown with a small tan head, not very viscous... Aroma of roastiness with coffee and choc notes.. Rich flavor of chocolate, coffee, licorice, and a roastiness... touch creamy medium bodied, somewhat carbonated...

Poured dark brown, with a very sweet malt with some smoky and earthy flavor, a solid porter but nothing amazing, with a very thin taste.

Reviewed 7/25/2009 (bottle): Pours a very dark dark brown colored body, with a small off-white color head, diminishing in size. Has a malty, grapy aroma, with some mustiness. Strong strawberry aroma. Malty taste, some roasted. Somewhat earthy.

Modest head that leaves very light lace on the glass. The liquor is dark brown where the faintest of light passes through. Nice aroma of burnt toast and darker malts. Well-balanced chocolate and black patent malt with a notable hop presence. The body is thin, like many of their other beers. But the flavor is rich and full.

Good roasted malt flavor, but the palate is a little bit thin. Just a little coffee. Drinkable enough. A decent session beer.

Looks like a dark chocolate brown. Nice finger of light brown head. Extremely dark with some light at the edges. Nutty, grainy malt aroma. Not bitter of burnt; no coffee. Has a sweet, semi-chocolatey aroma. Smells dry and a little roasted but not typical porter. Not strong but nice. Coffee increases as it warms. Chocolatey sweet flavor with a dry malt backbone. No new flavors, but balanced and nice enough. Nice tart aftertaste. Turns coffee-bitter toward the end with warmth. A bit ashy and chunky. Appropriate for style. Good body. A really nice, solid porter. Typical, but enjoyable.

Pours a deep brown, almost black. No head at all. Noticed no foam halfway through the pour so I made the second half of the pour very vigorous, and still no foam. Aroma of nice roasted malts. Taste is a bit smokey but not overpoweringly so. Bit of a nutty, choclatey taste too. Good stuff, not great.
