Commercial Description:
Bottle conditioned.
AleSmith Grand Cru really needs to be tasted to be truly appreciated. Toasty, caramelly flavors, as well as flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast strain, predominate over a tapestry of subtle nuances. Winner of the blue ribbon at the 1999 California State Fair, it is a thing of beauty. It is available in 750 ml. champagne bottles. Appearance: Crystal clear (when served properly), with a toast-brown color. Flavor: Starts with the tangy flavor of our championship Belgian yeast, then fades to a medium-light flavor of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Finishes dry and well-balanced with a slightly toasty flavor. Aroma: Vanilla and chocolate aromas predominate, along with the Belgian yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Clean and crisp, medium-bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content makes it feel like a fine wine.

On tap at Downtown Johnny Brown’s in SD. Pours amber brown with a fleeting white thin head. This beer defines chewy. It damn near numbs the mouth when you drink it. I get percimmons as a dominant flavor. Ground ripened percimmons after an October frost. Prunes, plums, and raisins. Sweet, not tart. Drying bitterness. UPDATE 3/2008: In the bottle from John’s Market in Portland. Looks gorgeous in the tulip. Smooth to drink and rich with all the same complexities indicated above. Still a solid classic.

Bottle 75cl. @ home.
Light unclear medium red orange - amber color with a small, fizzy, virtually none lacing, fully diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, vintage, dried berry, prune, light chocolate, moderate yeasty. Flavor is light heavy sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat, finish feel is light to moderate alcoholic. [20100208]

Overall Impression: This was another fairly stellar beer from AleSmith. Pours a dark red-brown color. Has a nice mix of flavors. There is a lots of stuff going on in this one. A lot of yeasty flavors, caramel, fruits, chocolate, hops, etc. Just a lot of stuff. Really nice brew, AleSmith has yet to really disappoint me.

Really nice Belgian--you’ll never suspect the ABV until you’ve finished the bottle! Pours a transparent red/deep tan. Nose of candy, apples, and other fruit (maybe strawberry?). Very bubbly, as the carbonation tickles the roof of your mouth. Flavor matches the nose, with a bit of sourness, and some yeasty funk. Very crisp and refreshing. Definitely a beer to celebrate with. Alesmith is one of my favorite finds of 2009.

A complex sweet yeasty beast. I’m not sure what to think about this one. It hides the alcohol well, but what do I taste? Certainly plenty of sugary malt, but what else? I’m not sure that it is interestingly enough beyond being a high gravity beer.

Clear ruby red color/ viscous beige head. Sweet yeasty aroma is grape juice, mild funk, peppercorn. Frothy light mouthfeel. Flavor is again sweet and yeasty with candi sugar, rootbeer spices, mild alcohol. good.
