One Zwanze edition from Cantillon I missed, but fortunately got a chance to revisit in vintage form from tap at Nanobrasserie de l’Ermitage during their Quintessence party; after the Zwanze event of 2014, this was also sold as Cuvée Florian apparently. Basically Iris Grand Cru (the non-dry-hopped, ‘crude’ version of the classic Iris) with sour cherries, this beer showed a creamy, egg-white, fairly stable, lacing head and misty, deep amberish-tinged ruddy bronze colour – a bit faded already by age, I suppose? Aroma of old tart cherry wine and cherry vinegar, lemon rind, redcurrant, sourdough, damp cellar, earth, unripe nectarine, old white wine. Fruity, estery onset, sour and acidic with sour kriek indeed but not as abundantly as many others, leaving more room for the unripe plum- and sour berry-like properties of the lambic itself (even if technically not even a true lambic due to the lack of wheat); fizzy carb, very dry and tart middle with a bread crust-like basis like Iris, a tad nutty even, unveiling its pure barley nature. Dry, tannic ending, lots of wet wood, cherry stones tannins as well I assume, funky barnyard aspects, hay, old dry sherry, lingering lambic fruitiness. Rounded, well-bodied and interesting lambic, its basic Iris nature recognisable enough, but I am left wondering how four years of age have affected its cherry compartment – would love to taste this from a bottle of the same age.
