COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The origins of this cloudy, sour, wheat beer style date back to the 16th century in the region of northern Germany in and around Berlin. Dubbed “The Champagne of the North” by Napolean’s troops, this refreshing beer, brewed by Frederick the Great himself, can be enjoyed as is…or if adventurous, inject a blast of flavor by allowing the addition of traditional flavoured syrups such as Himbeersirup (Raspberry) or Waldmeistersirup (Sweet Woodruff made from wild baby’s breath). Your senses will witness a sharp tartness beneath a dry, fruity funkiness bred by the wild Brettanomyces claussenii yeast fermentation. Don’t forget that change will save you.

UPDATED: JUL 17, 2019 Bubbling from top of bottle when first cracked the cap open! Slightly hazy copper and bronze coloured body with a very thin, super fast-dying off-white head. Aroma of light grass, subdued malt, a dose of lemon and citrus and very little else - fairly mild throughout. Light to Medium-bodied; Assertive effervescence; Strong wheat and herbal characteristics at first with a very nice and briny salt component, but this is all about the tart yeast and fruits that are noticeable throughout laying a subtle but distinct sour quotient on top of the yeast and wheat - very nice and elegant. Aftertaste shows the light fruit, a touch of grain and herbs and ending with the tart yeast and wheat elements that make this one a berliner weisse! Overall, a slightly non-normal (gushing bottle, hazy copper glow and not much head at all) beer at first that finishes as a good Berliner would - tart, refreshing and easy-drinking! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Wegman's in Fairfax, Virginia on 21-July-2018 for US$1,67 sampled almost exactly a year later at home in Washington on 16-July-2019.

On tap at Strangeways, pours a clear copper with a small white head. Aroma brings out light tartness and a touch of citrus. Flavour is very citric, with tons of tart citrus, moderate lacto and a bit of acetic character. Nicely constructed with perhaps a bit too much tartness.

OnTheTrail (1271) - Alexandria, Virginia, USA - AUG 3, 2018
Pours hazy light amber, big off white head. Aroma very funky, yeasty, fruity - peaches, pears. Sourness upfront, dominates, a bit of sweet candy and bread on the finish. Lightish mouthfeel. Everything subordinated to the tartness in the taste.

UPDATED: JAN 18, 2018 Nice sour flavor without being overpowering. Kind of like a slightly tart or sour apple cider.

Twelve ounce bottle. Clearly the most sour beer that I have ever tasted. It tasted like a batch of bad, old cider. I am moving away from Berliner Weisse beers.

$2.79 bottle from Total Wine, West Richmond. Pours clear medium golden with a small, soft white head. Aroma of fingernail polish, minor citrus. Flavor is quite tart - in your face lemon, cracker, salt. Citrus acid on the lips afterwards for sure.

Where and how: tasting @ VB
Aroma: quiet tart right up front, lima with sea salt. Authentic vibe.7+
Appearance :
Top: large cap, creamy in texture<br Base: hazy amber gold, tad too dark for style.
Palate : medium thinner body.
Taste: very tart, sweet mango, slightly metallic, lacking wheat based character. Berry fruitiness at end. Solid sour ale but Berliner?...
