Commercial Description:
Drakes Port Barrel Imperial Stout is our classic Imperial Stout that has been aged in Port wine barrels for seven months. There will be a total of four different barrels released over time. Each barrel will be bottled and corked with a different colored wax. This way you can discover the subtle nuances that each barrel has introduced to the beer. This beer is very lightly refermented in the bottle to achieve a small amount of carbonation. It would be best served in a glass of a temperature between 45-50ºF.

NorCal tasting Feb 07 - Gold wax bottle. This was just insanely tasty. Nose was a little soy (in a good way), chocolate, dark fruits, vanilla and lightly acidic. Appearance was dark brown in color with a light tan colored head. Mouthfeel was slick, oily and smooth. Flavors were acidic, sour, alcohol, chocolate, sweet malts and some nice port qualities. Just an outstanding beer. Too bad they are nearly impossible to find.

Sample courtesy of lunaticharness. Batch 1. Dark brown, light beige head. Huge aroma of chocolate and cherry, slight lacto. Flavor much the same, very vinous up front. Huge chocolate and roast through and through, slight sourness settimg in. Everything blends together quite nice.

Dark brown pour. Smells of alcohol and vanilla with a little vinous quality. Flavor is red grapes, brown sugar and alcohol. Medium body with lots of alcohol warming.

Bottle: The aroma is moderately roasty with chocolate and strong alcohol and port notes. It pours a dark brown with faint orange hilights around the outer edges of the glass and a small beige head. The flavor has lots of sour cherry and vinous notes with a touch of chocolate and faint roastiness.

Bottle. 2002. Big thanks to aspidites for providing a beer I never thought I’d get to try! Pours brown with a light tan head. Very busy aroma. Somewhat sour with port and tobacco notes. Oxidized but nice none-the-less. Sour and somewhat acidic with cherry, port and brandy notes. VERY nice!
