[Cask at GBBF 2004] An opaque brown beer with no head. The aroma is sweet malty on a sour background with notes of roasted bread. The flavor is sour malty with notes of roasted bread and chocolate - the aftertaste is fantastic. A weird mixture of the distant sourness as if it has been wild fermented and the great aftertaste.

Cask at Stoke Beer Festival 2004. Outstanding, the kind of beer I go to festivals hoping for, a real surprise. Sharp sweet aroma, none more black looks, plenty of roast and chocolate, sweetness and bite through the finish, really enjoyable stuff.

Deep red brew, chocolatey nose. Rich full flavour with lots of melted chocolate, bitterness, malt and some aniseed hints in the finish. A thick, malty and chocolatey finish rounds off this beer in style. (Cask @ Smithfield, Manchester)

A very easy to drink stout with a pleasant bitter edge..Very dark appearance with just a hint of roasted malt. Not bad at all.

Bottle conditioned, from The Offie in Leicester. Jet black, poor shortlived off white head and low fine condition. Gentle roast and hints of chocolate powder in the nose, low chocolate in the mouth with a gentle fruity edge and some low roasted barley noticable as it warms. Thin and slightly phenolic in the finish with some dryness from the roast barley lingering.

Bottled. Jet black with a thick, static light brown head. Ultra roasted malt aroma with a very dry, desiccated impression. Sharp, dry mouth feel, that is very one dimensional and doesn’t evolve on the palate at all. Looks pretty good but doesn’t stand up to the competition.
