Aroma is sweet malt with hints of brown sugar, toffee and molasses. Taste is a little burnt with a lot of sweet malt and oak. Finishes with toffee and more brown sugar. Such a pleasant beer to drink. We spent quite a bit of time at the DFH booth and ended up getting a few hats and T-shirts from the crew! This beer is a beautiful deep ruby brown with an intensely malty aroma, rich roast (coffee and bitter chocolate) and toffee on raisin toast. Chewy malty palate, roast-dominated, but with a refreshing fruity bitterness in the finish. Awesome! Berley31 (185), New Brunswick, Canada
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Nov 18, 2009 A: Poured with an average-to-large sized, light brown head that slowly diminished to 1/4-finger. Body is jet-black at first glance, and therefore opaque, until I hold it up to the light... you can then see some brown hints near the top. Fair lacing left on the sides of the glass.
S: Complex aroma of slight roasted malt, bitter hops, and chocolate... lots and lots of chocolate.
T: And the chocolate is what comes through first in the taste... bitter chocolate, which leads way to the lightly bitter finish from the hops. Very interesting and enjoyable... reminds me more of a stout in many ways than your typical brown ales. I can’t detect the 7%+ alcohol at all.
M: Full-bodied with a nice, creamy texture, and average carbonation bordering on the soft side.
D: This is a damn fine brew... kind of a combination of a brown ale, stout, and an IPA as well. A fantastic sipping beer. zizzybalubba (363), Elizabeth City, North Carolina, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Nov 17, 2009 On tap at Coasters. Dark brown pour with minimal head. Dark roasted malt aroma with some dark chocolate and only a hint of floral hops. Roasty malt flavor with some smoke and dark chocolate. This really leans more toward a porter than a brown ale. I’m not sure the flavor is quite as complex as the commercial description would lead you to believe but this is a very good "brown" ale. beerfest5 (167), Simsbury, Connecticut, USA
| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 4/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Nov 16, 2009 im just not getting it. on tap @ GIBF, I really dont know how this brewer gets such good ratings, i do like the 60 min IPA, but everything else Ive had has been way too overbearing, maybe i dont like my beers with that much flavor, but this one was too muddled, is it a malty IPA or is it a hoppy brown? jeff789 (384), Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 16, 2009 Pours a deep ruby, nice sized off white head with excellent lacing... Very aromatic, sweet dark sugars, coffee, chocolate, caramel, chocolate is very noticable as it warms.. Rich, roasty, coffee, chocolate flavors, and a touch of the hops to keep it in check... Lingeringly roasty, bitter finish with sweet undertones, dry, medium full bodied... this beer defines american brown ales... pressboxjoe (71), , New Jersey, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Nov 8, 2009 Bottle. Quite like a porter, though the roasty coffee bitterness is balanced by a fullness and a perfumy hoppiness. Sweet. It’s not a beer you want to drink a bunch of at one sitting, but not special enough to want to set one aside for savoring. iggynelix (16), Pennsylvania, USA
