Commercial Description:
This unique ale begins its life as a powerful and richly sweet stout to which Michigan tart cherries are added. The resulting black brew is complex, sweet and tart with a distinct cherry finish. It will improve with cellaring. Available September - May

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass. I pulled this from the celler, it is a 2006 bottle, batch 7674. Pours black with a small light brown fizzy head that fades away leaving poor lacing. The aroma is of cherrys and also of roasted malts. Taking a drink first I taste a hint of roast malts, but mainly I am tasting cherry. No hop flavor or bitterness. The cherry flavor sticks with you for a while. The body is medium to full with a creamy texture and soft carbonation.

Bottle. Moderate aromas of burnt and dark chocolate for the malt, resin for the hops, earth for the yeast, and hints of tar and raisin. Head is thin, light brown with virtually no lacing but good legs and is fully diminishing. Color is very dark brown. flavor starts lightly sweet and heavily acidic, then is moderately acidic and bitter in the finish with a long sour aftertaste. Palate is on the fuller side of medium, cramy with a soft carbonation and a finish that is chalky, lightly astringent and dry. A little too tart for my tastes but a pretty interesting Sweet Stout(?) Some of it’s harshness tempers as it warms in the glass.

incredibly dark pour, with a dark mocha head. Aroma of dark roasted almost burnt malts, and some sour cherries! I love that the cherries really come through on this beer! The cherries and their tartness really add a great depth to the thick robust, smokey malts. It finished with a big bold bitterness that really lingers. Great stuff!

A Mes rate. Bottle at home thanks to Ang.
Excellent red black with a thin tan head. Aroma is full on soy and cherries. Rather sickly and boarderline unpleasant. The only thing saving it is the awesome Bells black maltiness in the background. Flavour is more of the same. A faint fruity sourness on top of some tasty black malt. Far too much soy and liquorice. It’s one of those beers that instantly seems oxidised even though it isn’t. Tart and fruity and a little sickly. Far from the best I’ve had from Bells.

Bottle. Pours a jet black to brown hue with a thick tan head that sustains. Nose is sweet stout, with cherries and hints of lactic sourness lingering over a foundation of light chocolate roast. Flavor is initially lactic tartness with hints of cough syrup-like cherry and milk that gradually transition to cocoa and roast malts, grassy hops lurk and provide balance, finishes sweet. Medium-full body, creamy texture, light carbonation. A decent sweet stout that is a bit too cloying with the cherries and the lactic sourness is also distracting.

Clear dark black color with a average, frothy to creamy, fair lacing, fully diminishing, light brown head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, chocolate, coconut, cherry, wood. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter, light berry - cherry acidic with a long duration, coconut. Body is medium to full, texture is creamy, carbonation is soft. [20100207]

Deep brown with a small head. Big cherry flavor with roasty chocolate malt. A bit thin, but delicious.

Pours from the bottle to a dark brown with little head or lacing. Nose is a nice mix of cherry fruit and a hint of alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and tart, with a sweet cherry and alcohol taste. Alcohol comes on strong toward the end to dominate the finish, but still a most pleasant beer.
