On tap at Sac Brewing BW Fest. This amber ale has a full complex flavor dominated by caramel malt and finishing with a fruit and honey taste. It is true to the barleywine style in terms of appearance, taste and alcohol content, so I used it as a reference for the other BW samples.

2006 Beer of the Horn: A solid nose to pallet to finish transition. One of the most exhilarative barleywines at the Lucky Lab’s 2007 tastival. Potent and endearing citrus tinge with a nice fruity bite. Mmmm!

Intially I was thinking American Strong Ale, but as it warmed up that changed.Hazy copper color.Huge hop and malt character.Bitter/sweet, orange/citrus flavor with a touch of caramel.

On tap at Toronado SF. Clear copper with a small off-white head, slowly fading to a thick creamy film. Vanilla, toffee and caramel dominate the aroma with a little raisin and leather behind. Flavor is a little sweet with raisins, light Concord grapes, and the scorched toffee--only a tinge of leather. Bitterness peaked at a 2-3 with some light alcohol burn. Full syrupy body with light carbonation. Pretty good, but due to the sweetness I could only take down a glass.

On Tap @ Lucky Baldwin’s Barleywine fest 2005

Clouded deep reddish brown appearance. Fruity strawberry and piney hop aroma. Jammy fruity flavor, dried cherries, very hoppy bitter in the finish. Lingers bitter and spicey.

A glowing ruby rust brown color with a big ass slightly dirty white head. Has a sweet, spicey, licorice aroma. Weak, watery, tastes like spicey water. Unimpressive.

I "horned" this stuff the morning after the Boonville Beer Fest ("horning" means drinking in Boontling supposedly). Copper color with a white head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, fruit, and some hops. Flavor is sweet, malty, and fruity, with caramel, earth, and some hops on the finish. Medium-full, smooth palate. Very "hornable" for the style.
