drjoeng (2423) - SINGAPORE - NOV 19, 2020
UPDATED: NOV 19, 2020 .8%ABV. Berliner weisse Tasted this can cold which poured out pale slightly hazy yellow, 5ºSRM. There was a fleeting head of abundant white foam. The grain nose on this was raw flour, bread dough, soda biscuits. The nose was also dominated by moderate-high fresh citrus with bright lemon, lime, and kumquat aromas, referencing the peel and leaves, more than than the juice. There was also some bright minerality to the nose, likely an effect of the high carbonation giving the impression of wet stone. The nose was like sparkling mineral water with lemon or lime slices, but with a little more obvious citrus in the nose, so approaching that of an old school British sparkling lemonade. The body was crisp and light with high carbonation. There were no harsh or edgy elements to the palate. This was like sipping a fruit-flavored sparkling water. The sweetness and the bitterness were low on this one. The perceived sweetness may have been higher due to the bready aroma, the impression of fruit, and the high carbonation. The perceived bitterness was low due to the perception of minerality. There was an impression of salt due to the carbonation and the resultant impression of minerality. Hop flavors were gentle, grassy, and referenced fresh herbs like chervil The finish was cloud-light, brief, and excellently balanced. Overall, this was a refreshing quaff that was more mineral water than ale. The dry-hopped character and the carbonation carried the entire experience, so definitely have this one fresh!
