Commercial Description:
This traditional German wheat beer has a huge fruity nose of banana and cloves from the Bavarian ale yeast that marries with the notes of unsweetened chocolate and caramel from the German specialty malts.

Poured a hazy copper color with a small off white head and some lacing. Aroma of wheat, roasted toffee, some nuts, and light banana. Much of the same, sweet caramel, lemon, tropical fruits, nuts, and wheat in the taste.

After being greatly disappointed by Iron Hill’s hefeweizen, I was surprised to find this variant among the better beers I’ve had. Unlike its lighter cousin, this one was very balanced, the flavours blended very well. There was a rich wheat flavour, a lot of fruitiness--definitely feeling the bananas--but this aspect blended with the other flavours well. There was no sourness, which I was very happy about. There is a lot of body and substance to this beer as well, and I liked that. This one totally wins in my book; I can say it’s the best brew I’ve had from Iron Hill so far.

I only had this from a sampler, so I didn’t quite pick up all the subtleties noted in the other reviews...but did notice a light banana flavor and a lot of other flavors going on in this one. This was a nice bavarian wheat beer...but nothing to make it stand out among the other I’ve had (in fact, in my unrefined opinion, just about all the beers of this style taste almost the same anyway).

20091010 Tap at Maple Shade. Glad to see a bp dunkelweizen that’s appropriately murky and viscous. Sweet, bready aroamas, a bit of butterscotch, fruit cake. Full, creamy body with little to no bitterness but a slight bit of sour acidity. Flavors are surprisingly but not unpleasantly less German than expected. Rather than the sometimes tiresome overripe fruits sometimes associated with dunkelweizen, this one has more toasty grain and toffee notes. Nice.

Draft at North Wales. This was one of the highlights for me. Poured burnt sienna with medium off-white head. Aroma of malt, heavy nuts, corn flakes, and caramel. Firm, dense palate with a complex malt, nut, toffee, cabernet taste. I found this to be exceptional.

Draft: Poured a cloudy brown, almost dirty water color with not much head. The aroma was that of a Hefe, bananas and cloves. The flavor was great, some fruit, some malts, some nuts and more malts. Overall, dark yet refreshing, a great spring/summer beer.

Poured a murky brown body with a bubbly beige head. Aroma is bananas with a hint of citrus. Flavors were mostly bananas with some yeast, raisin, and citrus flavors. I’ve been really liking this style lately.

Pours a hazy amber with a creamy head. The nose is very big on the banana clove combo, yeasty, wheaty, all of the typical weisse aromas concentrated. Flavor also shows lots of banana, estery, yeasty, clove, wheaty. Soft smooth mouthfeel.
