Commercial Description:
Ath, Belgium, the City of Giants, is famous for its annual Parade of Giants. Every year, Goliath – whose name is pronounced ‘Gouyasse’ in the local dialect – leads the parade. The Brasserie des Géants (Giants’ Brewery), in Ath, didn’t think long before naming its first brew ‘Gouyasse.’ Gouyasse is a golden Belgian ale, and a nice one, at 6% alcohol by volume.
Only trouble is, the Gouyasse, at a respectable but not intimidating 6% abv, was not ferocious enough to carry the name of the mythical giant, especially here in the U.S., where we like our beers big – the bigger the better. And so it was that we proposed to the brewery a stronger beer, with the name Goliath. They came back with Goliath Tripel, which they have also packaged for sale in Belgium. It’s become their biggest seller there in very short time.
Goliath is 9% alcohol by volume, a little more red in the face than your average tripel (almost an amber, really), nicely balanced with a bracing hop note versus a solid malt wallop. Goliath is the only Tripel in Belgium that is all-malt – without any sugar or other additives in. (Everyone else uses some sugar to ‘thin out’ their Tripels, which gives them alcohol, without the body that you normally get from malt.) That means Goliath starts out a bit sweeter than some, but over time, as the live yeast in the bottle do their work, it gets drier and more punchy. The first batch, after about half a year in the bottle, is about where we want it, but it will probably become a greater beer as time goes by. We recommend that you check in on Goliath every once in a while.

Pours brown with a moderate, fine head. Smells of pinto beans, which I’m not crazy over, but it’s definitely a change of pace. Flavor is pleasantly complex with more malt and fruity notes.

750 ml bottle poured a hazy yellow with a lasting white head. Aromas of pear, pineapple, citrus, bread and light spice. Palate was light to medium bodied and crisp. Flavors of pear, banana, bread, vanilla, lighty pineapple and light spice with a crisp lingering fruity finish.

Really, really enjoyed this one. I like a beer with a good back story. Poured straw yellow with a medium head that settled into some nice lacing. Citrus aroma. Nice, fizzy head that provides some carbonation before the fresh hops taste hits you. It ends up finishing a bit sweet to balance out the hops. Excellent the whole way through. I would be interested to age it a bit and see how it turned out.

Bottle. Pours an orange toned body with a mostly white head. Sweet citrus notes, some light spices,earth y with some light grass y tones. A modest warming with a bread y yeast y grass y body. A decent ale.

Tap at Max’s Belgian Fest 2010. A bit better than their Urchon. Pours a hazy bright copper with a thin lasting white head. Aroma is minty lemon with orange a bit soapy and solvent- bubblegum and clove phenolics and light dough. Flavor is salty spritzy Belgian yeast with spices , pepper cardamon, earth salted cured meaty pork almost, toast, and clove with a medium finish. A bit rough overall but ok.

750 ml. bottle. Pours honey-amber-yellow with big fizzy white belgian head. Aroma of clove, other spices, flowers, yeast, plum, fig. Taste is dry, but with white grapes and yeasty spice prominent, crisp and smooth, very nice. I really liked this one, especially the aroma.

Draft at Pizzeria Paradiso. Light clowdy yellow nice, slow moving bubble. Weak but malt and yeast on the nose. Midium body with a waterly finish. Not exciting.

Straw colored, slightly cloudy, with a very big head that settles quickly to leave moderate lacing. Aroma of fresh hops, some licorice and citrus. Flavor has nice hops throughout, but not over the top - well balanced with malt. Good tripel.

On tap at Birreria Paradiso. Poured a clear gold with a baby white head that left no lace. White wine and candies on the nose. Flavor is taken over by a massive hop presence for a tripel with some serious alcohol notes and candy sweetness verging on cloying.
