Bottle (2015 edition). Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (caramel), with notes of cardboard, marshmallow, nougat, maple syrup, hazelnut extract. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Full body, syrupy/creamy texture, soft carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. Well, there’s very little Belgian about this...imagine a strong American brown ale left to oxidize for a few months, and that’s about what you have here. Very candy-ish caramel-heavy aroma with what seems like hazelnut extract added (remember Rogue Hazelnut Brown? it’s kinda like that but oxidized). Almost harshly sweet without much to balance...but the deep south loves sugar, so that’s probably to be expected from a MS brewery. Hard to enjoy.

22 oz. Clear copper-brown with a few bubbles. Nose is prune, soy and merlot. Flavors of red grape, raisin, light citrus and soy. Heavy body has a pleasant light-medium carbonation and a nice dryness that keeps the big malt nicely in check. A bit boozy for only a 9% quad.

My Bottom Line:
Figs, raisins and cloves converge in this sweet and complex Belgian-style Strong Ale.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam sits atop the purplish dark brown.
-Residual sugar level is higher than average for this type of brew.
-Specialty malts and yeasty phenolics are nicely harmonious.
-Alcohol warms up the back end.
-This is too heavy if it is aiming to be an authentic Quadrupel. However, as a dessert beer or nightcap, it is very well executed and enjoyable.

Bottle.
