UPDATED: MAY 3, 2021 This is a backlog rating from years ago from a bottle purchased at Party Source, from notes. When I had this beer it was average to below average for the style and not something I wanted to have again or I just didn't get back to my notes because of my technology at the time, work and/or family. Words to describe this beer are roasted malts, nutty, chocolate, odd malty finish.

UPDATED: MAR 14, 2020 Keg at Eugene City Brewery (Rogue), Eugene, OR on 19/06/2008. Quite big fruity notes on this and strange almost umami hints.

Probably my favorite right now. Balanced with a smooth; clean finish. And I kinda dig that I can only get it on tap or in a 40. Makes me a super happy girl. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

1pint 6 oz bottle. Deep rich scents of coffee and chocolate and the roasted soba gives a distinctive note. Pours a dark black brown with a big tight off-white head and some lacing. Taste is fizzy sweet and sour sumultaneously with an oily finish that lingers with an almost sour plum tang - persimons or cumquats. Very distinctive and good.

650 ml bottle. deep brown pour that thickens up to opaque black, finger of foamy tan head. Aroma is nutty, with some roast. Some heavier malt notes come through in the malt, toffee, but still dominated by nuttiness, some light fruitiness (orange) come from the hops in the finish. Enjoyable but just good for me.

BB log, Bottle from Canals West Deptford . Pours muddy red brown with a smaller beige head and decent lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, orange skin, wood, and pine. Medium body. Finishes dry and somewhat hoppy for this 5.3 percent Rogue offering.

IslandHaole (1302) - Misawa, JAPAN - JUL 10, 2016
Clear brown with ruby edges, has a foamy tan thick head of fine bubbles. Hints of Hazelnut, cocoa, grain with toasted malty sweetness. Rich, sweet, roasty, nutty. Has a nice mouthfeel & good body. I like this, it isn’t a top shelf beer but very solid and well made. I could drink it often!

Onslow (1888) - Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA - JUN 20, 2016
Pour from a 22 oz bomber. Deep clear dark brew that glowers reddish brown in the sunlight. Two fingers of tan head upon pouring that settles down to a steady frothy creamy small head for the duration. Nutty aroma dominated by rich roasted malts. Taste is sweet malts, caramel and nuts up front finishing with a lingering nutty malty rich finish with shades of bitter and sour hops towards the end. Ends clean and dry with a just bit of lingering roasted nutty malt at the tail. A complex malt based brew with a unique and interesting flavor profile. Based on the taste its sort of like a brown ale but much richer and more complex than most., Really enjoyable.

Bottle at Taps Beer Bar, Changkat, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a murky dark brown with a frothy light tan head. The aroma is light spice, light roast, light grainy hop. The flavour is light liqourice roasty bitter with a dry mineral light roast, light medicinal hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with average carbonation.
