Commercial Description:
We welcome the coming of autumn with McMenamins "Scarecrow ESB." Scarecrows are a familiar figure in the fall rural landscape that ward off birds from the fields where barley and hops are cultivated for future use as raw ingredients in ales and lagers. Scarecrow ESB is an exceptionally drinkable Extra Special Bitter style ale. This mesmerizing brew is well balanced with a wonderfully complex yet unassuming malty sweetness and a delightful yet unobtrusive flavorful hoppiness. The finish is delicate and crisp with a wonderful, pungent hop aroma. This outstanding balance of malt and hops makes Scarecrow ESB a very savory, yet very smooth and satisfying brew. Starts pouring late September Grains: Gambrinus Pale Ale Malt, Gambrinus Honey Malt, Briess Vienna Malt, Briess Flaked Barley, Great Western 40L Crystal Malt, Great Western 120L Crystal Malt Hops: Simcoe (Bittering), Amarillo (Flavor), Yakima Golding & Hallertauer (Aroma) Specifications: Original Gravity: 1.047; Terminal Gravity: 1.010 Alcohol by Weight: 4.77%

Draught @ Roseburg Station:   Orangish, hints of amber, fairly hazy, thin white head, sparce lacing.   Odd color for an ESB, not very dark nor Reddish.   Soft biscuity nose, malty, slight dankness.   Hmm, smells more in line than it looks.   Has more of a hop presence than most ESBs.   Not much on the malt or biscuity front wrt the tongue.   It kinda reminds me of a lighter Hales Extra, and ESB but sharper and on the lighter side with a fairly assertive hop presense.   Finish isn’t as crisp as others, a little dull and muddled.   Okay beer, but not as good as others.

On tap at the Kennedy School. Deep copper colored pour with a thick cap of white head. Aroma is grain and caramel malt, light spicy hops. Taste is grain, caramel malt, spicy hop bitterness at the end. Typical McM’s brew.

Appearance: hazy orange, wispy beige head, drippy lace
Aroma: light sweet malt aroma, plenty of woodsy earthyness
Flavor: sweet caramel malt flavor, nice bready character, lots of earthyness leads into a balanced bitterness and light bitter finish

On tap in mill creek. Nice amber to orange color. No real lasting head. Aroma of burnt raisins and sweet malt. Nice malty flavor but not too sweet. Balanced well. Smooth finish. I am not an esb fan but this is not bad.

Hazy pumpkin orange color--unusual for an ESB, but redolent of autumn and pumpkins and Halloween. Aroma is mild, but hits all the right notes, with Simcoe and Amarillo pleasantly intermingling. Flavor is mild hoppiness, light citrus and bittering notes, no fruitiness, sort of and ESB/APA hybrid. Surprised to see this as high as 6% ABV. Moderate-to-mildly flavored, with a well balanced bitterness. This is a good autumn ESB.

One of the few McMenamins brews I really like. A great ESB, bitter but has a creamy aftertaste, the fact that it is organic is quite shocking. Best organic bitter. Goes well with a chocolate cookie.

Draft at the Edgefield location. A hazy copper colored beer with a thin orange head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt, grass, and hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of grass, hops, citrus, and grapefruit, leading to a dry bitter finish. The body is thin.

Sampled on draught in Beaverton. Very hebal palate. Balanced, yet not overhopped. An excellent example of a textbook ESB.
